Old High School in Pascagoula to be Renovated as Apartments

The old Pascagouls High School, long threatened with demolition, will instead be renovated into a senior housing apartment complex. Public spaces like the auditorium will also be renovated for public use. This is an excellent example of what can be done with creative thinking and tax credits.

South Beach Resort

A New Orleans developer, Ray Wooldridge, is assembling property on and above US 90 for a development known as South Beach. The renderings in the article don't show much detail, so it's difficult to make a real assessment of the merits of the development. The development will include a hotel, condominiums, shops and restaurants/ I like the mixed-use nature of the plan, but would also like to see more of what this will really look like. On a positive note. Wooldridge does appear to have had some experience with owning sports teams, but has he had experience with development on the $800m + scale proposed here?

Has there been anything new on the Biloxi Lighthouse park?

I believe that the city council has voted in favor of the plan, but the logistics still have to be worked out. As far as I know, this entails moving US 90, so things may take some time to get moving.

It's amazing how the Casino Magic is just sitting there like that...I hope Harrah's does something with the property soon! Nice pictures! Are the last two of New Orleans?

yea the last two are of new orleans, it is sad what is going on in new orleans.

Thanks for posting all those pics dgreco  I have not been to the Mississippi Coast since Katrina. Thank God for people like Habitat for Humanity; that is very admirable of you. That bent flag pole is impressive.

Philip Martin Faces An Uphill Battle

Choctaw chief Philip Martin faces an uphill battle in his quest to build a $300m casino and hotel in Jackson County. While I cannot blame the Choctaws for wanting to enter the market, it cannot be denied that this has had a negative effect upon the rebuilding of the Coast. Most major casino companies will be reluctant to invest on the Coast until this question is settled. It will be interesting to see whether Martin can hold on to his position in the next election. For one who has accomplished so much for his people, it would be a shame to see him go out with a whimper.

Demolition of Former Gulf Beach Resort Begins

The Gulf Beach Resort, fka Howard Johnson's on Beach Boulevard has finally begun. This building was damaged beyond repair by Katrina. Its replacement will be a condo/hotel, though I haven't yet seen a rendering of the proposed project. I'l try to do some research on this.

Avalon Condominium-Hotel

The Avalon, a drastic renovation of the former Gulf Tower Apartments in Biloxi, has finally received approval from the city council. The website isn't yet complete, but it promises a high-end hotel non-gaming), several restaurants and a large swimming pool and terrace. Given its prominent location near the Beau Rivage, I can't imagine that it wouldn't do well. This is another development from GCID.

Del Castle Demolished

A landmark house in Ocean Springs reputed to have been a hideout for Al Capone has been demolished by its owner. Del Castle, a Mediterranean revival house from the late 1920s, was in fairly good repair and there was really no good reason for its demolition. I saw the house in November and it appeared to be in decent shape. Unfortunately, its owner thought the house was too big and too difficult to maintain. Mayor Connie Moran failed in her duty to protect the house. Considering the many losses inflicted by Katrina, the greatly reduced number of landmarks on the Coast ought to be treasured even more. I'm very sad to see the house go. Ocean Springs is poorer for its loss.

RiverWalk

A mixed-use development will be constructed on the banks of the Jourdan River in Biloxi. The renderings look attractive. I will try to find more about the project and will post here. This appears to be well designed and of a good density. The buildings are not more than ten floors.

Future Use of Tullis-Toledano Manor Property Debated

The future use of the property where the Tullis=Toledano Manor once stood is up for debate. While Harrah's has assembled over 80 acres of property nearby, it is unlikely that this property will be used for casino development. The Seafood Museum has expressed interest in rebuilding on this site, and the issue will be devated at the next city council meeting on Tuesday, April 24th. Plans for the Harrah's property will be unveiled next month.

Slabs Still Dominate Strip

Slabs of former businesses still dominate what was once the Biloxi "Strip." This may be changing as condominium developments take the place of former chain restaurants. All in all, it is a good thing to see the likes of Waffle House and Chili's go the way of all flesh. Restaurants will soon spring up to replace those lost in the storm. Let's hope that they will be more attractive ones.
