Two Louis Sullivan cottages in Ocean Springs are in danger of demolition at the hands of FEMA....from Preservation Magazine online....

The loss of these two cottages would be particularly sad. I hope a buyer comes forth to rescue them.

Katrina tours? Ghoulish!

From the Clarion Ledger....

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll.../512310339/1002

Yeah I don't recall which topic it was but I think this was mentioned before. I guess there's afine line to being able to bring in tourism and tourism dollars and having tourists watching people trying to rebuild their lives. Although I'm not sure if they're all quite that creepy. I would think there are some who just want to actually see the destruction with their own eyes as Nate said.

^I just hate these tours.

Most of the people who have to deal with the people coming up along side and taking pictures and pointing and whatever else dont support them, and they really don't help bring money to the Katrina relief fund. The only positive is they bring in some tourism money. Overall I'm just not a supporter of these things.

The latest hints on what Harrah's might be building from the Sun Herald....

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/13589234.htm

It looks as though they might keep the Bayview building and build something else on the site of the other tower. The reference to two separate hotels suggests that one might be branded as a Horseshoe and the other as a Caesars. This also suggests two medium-sized hotels instead of one gargantuan hotel. Still, no real announcements have been made.

The Golden Nugget project may not be dead after all.....from the Sun Herald...

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/13593483.htm

Assembling 23 separate parcels of land looks like an expensive proposition. I would assume they wouldn't be doing this without cause. Or are they merely planning to speculate?

Interestin news. I also doubt that they would be doing all of this without a cause, but who knows.

Exisiting neighborhoods had prevented much development from happening. Over the years, there have been any number of ambitious developments proposed along the waterfront The majority of them were torpedoed through the vociferous objections of neighboring residents. Without stable neighborhoods nearby to temper development, developers may propose more audacious buildings. This could be good, or it could allow some really ugly trash to get built. Once again, the working blueprint of suggestions in the report of the Governor's Commission on Rebuilding and Renewal show the way with remarkable clarity and insight. Of course, these sketches are merely suggestions.

A harborfront redevelopment proposal for Long Beach. The complete design will be unveiled on Friday. THe building looks relentlessly slab-like to me. I'd think that breaking it up into distinctive parts would make it more attractive. In any event, I suppose it is an improvement over what's left.....nothing.

Until I hear a name I know and respect in the hotel/casino business in connection with the project, I will remain skeptical. Perhaps the Gollott brothers know enough to retain good management, but at this point, there's little to go on. I am having grim thoughts of another low-rolling casino on this one. Of course, the growing market has to support all types of operations. I remain extremely cautious about this one.

Say goodbye to almost all of the smaller non-casino hotels on the Coast.....from WLOX tv...

In most cases, this may actually be a good thing. The few historic ones to survive are probably going to emerge as parts of elaborate condo developments anyway. Rebuilding the Motel 6s, TraveLodges and Best Westerns as they were wouldn't be too smart.
