Norfolk Light Rail and Transit

Good, at least i know were on the same team. (no pun intended)

Yeah, but I know what your saying, what if we could of had the Hornets and the Nationals? That would be insane. But, I do believe that having a professional sports team would get Norfolk some major respect in the USA. Then, you would start seing tons of more development. People think development is going strong now...watch out!

Alot of people here will disagree but I too think it would spark some more development in the DT area. Businesses might see this area as a good place to do buisness.

This report you are referring to is actually available online. If you go to HRT's website, click on Norfolk Light Rail, you will see a link for the final environmental impact. This is the same article as what is at the library. That way you can see it without having to go to the library.

I would think that they would have to have the building completed by the same time frame as the LR project so that it doesn't cause any impedence on the LR path.

It would be ideal to have the building built before the Light rail but it is not necessary. You can build in any given situation, the problem is how much do you want to pay.

Just checked, and they dont have any mass transportation. They have a train that connects to Philly and NYC, but its jsut a basic train, not mass trans.

Vegas has their monorail thing running up and down the strip now. It's being extended to reach downtown I believe. And they don't have a team, do they?

Monorail in the u.s. is used primarily for attractions. It is not used in any mass transit form here. The monorail is not a mass transit. It is nothing more than a small two mile line that travels the strip stopping at select casinos. Light rail on the other hand is mass transit. It starts out in outlying areas and brings passengers into the city. These are two totally different concepts. Las vegas does have a bus rapid transit line running that serves as there mass transit along with regular bus service. They are actually studying whether to build a light rail line there which is in its infancy still.

Thanks Urbanfan. That summed it up pretty well. Well said.

So, are there none? That would make us the 1st! I see a sports team brewin'.

P.S. I wouldn't call Nascar a Professional Sports Team. Thats kinda like the LPGA comes to Williamsburg for a stop on the tour. Its not "our" team that recognizes this area as home. Thats how I would define a Pro sports team. But, your def. could be diffrent than mine. I'm cool with that. ;)

I was interpreting it as pro sports, which NASCAR is, and I would like to see a team but I really doubt this would be the reason for pro sports to land in Norfolk but I understand what you are implying.

NASCAR is a Pro Sport. No doubt about it. But I was thinking of a pro sports "team" that would be recognized nationally as Norfolks team. NASCAR isn't really team and they dont have a home stadium. Ya know?

But I am implying that I think that when we get the light rail, it is a percurser(sp?) to much bigger and better things.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have seen this question asked elsewhere but I didn't have the answer too it. Maybe i'm overlooking something but are there plans to extend light rail to Oceanview? In light of recent announcements I think it may be necessary.

Mayn, that would be great. If the city could some how run a line from EVMS up Hampton Blvd, by NOB, past 564 to OV, that would have to stimulate even more development out in OV. Imagine Norfolk having it's own resort strip that was accessible by light rail :shok:

That would be crazy!!! (in a good way).

I think Norfolk needs to prove to the feds, these OV projects, that they need to add additional lines. The more dense we become the more the feds can't ignore us.

I just now mentioned this same thing on the OV thread. I hope the city is at least keeping its options open yet while allowing the development. Sometimes it can be expensive or even impossible if rampant development is already in place.

Funny you say that...Thats actually how it was back in the 1900's-till about 1940's(trolley).

OV was a huge tourist destination and everyone who lived in the "city" would head out to OV to go to the beach on the weekends to relax, party, shop.

Hopefully we'll see that here in the next 10-or-so years.

Hopefully. I would love to go out with my wife and have dinner on a open patio looking on the bay. I really hope that they put some great looking buildings down there. I hope its a good amount.

Does anybody know the original route of the OV trolley? Would the city consider it as an alternate route for light rail? Would it be feasible to do such????
