Here's the Middlesex County Courthouse in Cambridge that is so ugly that it seems to be rarely photographed. And it is so forgettable that I wondered for a while what the building was without remembering that I had jury duty there.

Greenville, SC is getting a new Federal Courthouse, though money will not be available until next Fall at the earliest. We expect a design to be complete sometime next year as well. It should be a pretty neat building:

• 250,000 - 300,000 square feet

• 12 stories

• Located on a triangular piece of land, surrounded by three major roads as you enter the city from I-385.

Our current Federal building has been around awhile - just 3 stories and pretty inconspicuous.

We're scheduled to get a new one in 2009, but with all the Federal budget issues, there's no telling when or if it will actually happen. The estimate, including cost to the city to acquire the land downtown in the blocks next to City Hall, for the approximately 50,000 sqft building, is $50 million, and would be the anchor of the planned downtown revitalization district.

Minneapolis' Federal Courts building was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and finished in 1997. There certainly seems to be a continuing similarity to all the recent Federal Courthouses across the country!

Arquitectonica designed Miami's new Federal Courthouse. Its a 15-story one-half conclave, one-half convex glass walled building. Its really two separate buildings connected by an all glass middle starting about 5 or 6 floors up. Construction is just about completed.

Kansas City's Federal Courthouse: Charles Evans Whittaker

The building is named after the first and only Kansas Citian to be named to the Supreme Court (1957 - 1962).

The building is 595,000 square feet, took three years to build, had a $90 million dollar construction cost,

is ten stories high, is 290 feet above ground.

Wow, all these courthouses are so beautiful compared to Nashville's block of a building.
