^I didn't know Toyota was named after a city.

Anyway, I just found out that my hometown, Franklin, has a sister city. It is Carleton Place, Canada. We are also looking for one in the UK.

We have an estimated population of about 47,000 right now, and we're gaining over a thousand a year.

There is actually a sister cities committee in government, and they find sister cities, or cities whose economy and size is similar to that of their own. You can find it on most cities' webpage or on the sister cities international website.

It's interesting to note that one of Tempe's sister cities is Timbuktu. I suppose it's because of the ancient importance of both as trade centers (there was once a major Hohokham city on the western edge of Tempe along the Salt River).

We only have one sister city in my little city of 30,000, and that is New Orleans, LA.

We are sister cities because Bemidji, MN, is the first city on the Mississippi river and New Orleans the last.

There have been major community efforts in Bemidji to provide aid for the people in New Orleans affected by Katrina. We also used to have a large Mardi Gras party every year but that died out in the mid '90s. Now talks are underwayt to revive the tradition and use hte proceeds to help those in need in NO.

Auckland has five sister cities, and two friendship cities!

Sister cities:

Fukuoka, Japan

Busan, Korea

Guangzhou, China

Brisbane, Australia

Los Angeles, USA

Friendship cities :

Shinagawa, Japan

Tomioka, Japan

pacific.jpg

all of our sister cities are located on the Pacific Rim. I'm assuming this has something to do with trade links...?

The first city to "unite" with Auckland, was Los Angeles in 1976.
