Sister Cities

Tuscaloosa maintains active Sister Cities relationships with Narashino, Japan and Schorndorf, Germany.

In alternating years, community and school groups visit those cities, or groups from those cities visit us.

There are plans next year to add a small Sister Cities Park along the riverfront, and to add a miniature replica of Schorndorf's town square inside the children's museum. There are items from Narashino on display in City Hall and at the children's museum, and there are a couple of small plantings of cherry trees in town donated by Narashino businesspeople.

At one point, there were plans to add a sister city somewhere in Africa, but that fell through for unknown reasons.

Our main suburb, Northport, yesterday passed a resolution to "adopt" the town of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, an area that was squashed by Katrina. Like Northport, Bay St. Louis is a small town with an active art community. Northport has sent one trailer-truckload of supplies down there so far, and is raising private donations to send another later this month.
