Port/ Channelside

Tampa Erection

The port is in charge of everyhing in the bottom of the channel past the aquarium, the city controlls the rest. The city knows how it wants to develop channelside, but the port also has plans of its own. The port could be doubleing the number of cruise ship terminals making it 6. This would be bad for cargo ships, as no other ship can be coming in past the skyway while another ship is leaving. They need to start using containers to maximize cargo. They also want to put a 50 story hotel in the parking lot of the Port Authority building. Makes sense if that many people ae coming in on cruises. There is also a proposal for another 50 story towers across the street from Towers at Channelside that will be called downtown channelside. It will be across the street on the water. 300+ This project is proposed. The hotel does not need to be approved by anyone as the port is in charge of the property. Oh yea, if you have ever seen a map of the channel there is a piece at the end that fingers out toward channelside drive. This is going to be filled in for the hotel.

Sorry, I just thought that smiley looked cool. Anyways, I heard today from a guy that works with the port that the issue of the channel not being wide enough for 1 ship to be entering while another is exiting will be easily solved by dredgeing an area where one ship can pull into while the others pass. Pretty good idea. He also said there are going to be 2 or 3 more cranes going up in October that can unload containers. I can already see the money rolling in. That dredged spot should solve all of the problems. The industry sector wont be pissed because they cant get in the channel, and the cranes should help unload more considering you can ship a higher volume with containers. Also, commercial and residential should explode if 6 cruise terminals are in the channel. Tampa will definately be the most attractive port on the gulf. And unlike other cities that have to play catch up on public infrastructure, we already have the trolley.

Oh yea, I also heard some time ago about plans on extending the aquarium.
