An interesting article in the Biz Journal regarding the work that the Downtown Alliance, which is funded by assessments to downtown businesses, has been doing over the past four years (highlights):

$472,000 has gone to beautification efforts (planters, trees, sidwalks), which has triggered other property owners to do their own

Property owners outside of the district are clamoring to be included in future projects

The Alliance is working with the DDA to take the info gathered from the Toronto group to create a branding strategy and website through locally owned Hanon McKendry (aka the Kansas City marketing effort), http://www.hanonmckendry.com/
