They are mortified, not because of the height, as much as the fact that nobody is going to want to buy their houses, at fair market value, as Atrium gobbles up lots.

As a CNA at CMC Main, I will tell you first hand we’re in dire need of an expansion. Being the only Level I Trauma Center in the area we’re often above capacity.

Ugh, I am not really a fan from an architectural perspective but I understand the necessity.

One change I would like to see in this part of the neighborhood is for Freedom park to have a more urban feel (it currently feels like it is walled in to me). I wonder if some reconfiguration of the park entrance along with this tower lurking in the background could help with that.

Sure do wish we had better information on medical school plans to go along with this discussion, they way these parts fit together is important to the future of this part of town.

I could see why that guy would be mad. Charlotte has 520 people per hospital bed (compared to 400 people/bed median). Not where a fast growing city would want to be long term.

The building on the left is where the Carolinas Rehabilitation Hospital and the Visitor Parking deck are located.

Excerpt:  "Two major redevelopments took a big step forward on Monday after members of Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to approve both of them.  Rezonings were approved for the redevelopment of Atrium Health's midtown flagship campus and the former Eastland Mall property to accommodate, in both cases, substantial projects that would reimagine two key sites in midtown and east Charlotte.   The Atrium rezoning, which covers about 70 acres at Carolinas Medical Center, will allow a new bed tower, rehabilitation hospital, medical and general office space, colleges or universities, dormitories and affordable housing.  Part of the midtown campus will be razed to make way for new health-care facilities, but the rezoning also allows an increase in development to 4.8 million square feet, up from the existing 3.3 million square feet at CMC."  ...  "The Atrium rezoning had a number of nearby residents signed up in opposition at the project's public hearing last month.   But Larken Egleston, district council member, said Monday the Dilworth Community Association has given its approval for the project after dozens of changes were made by Atrium since the hearing.  The DCA was previously agnostic on the petition.  Changes include a firm commitment to providing affordable housing if residential development is pursued and updated building height on a portion of the site.  "I think an incredible amount of work has gone into this," Egleston said.  Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt said the petition was a tough one.   "Atrium has worked collaboratively with neighbors but it does affect a lot of people," Eiselt said.  "It's frankly an elephant in the neighborhood. Atrium Health's rezoning would allow nearly 4.8 M sq. ft. of total development at its flagship campus.  This site plan depicts the development areas as described in the rezoning petition.

When did they tear that down? I remember there being a Long Horn close to Dilworth when I was growing up!

I think it was 2007 (ish). The Ozark Bank / Charlotte Radiology office building is there now.

Yea, I miss Frankie's too. That block was once a decent restaurant row (Longhorn, Frankies, Art's, Dilworth Bar and Grill and there were various pretty good sub shops in the strip center (adjacent to Art's) as well). Only one of those places remains, I guess its good for property values, but its bad for my stomach.

My mother was a big Frank Sinatra fan, and every time she visited Charlotte we at at Frankies, I liked it too.  Seems it was a hangout for Lynn Wheeler for a while.

I was born in '90 and as a the world's pickiest eater, I stopped letting my parents take me to Frankie's after I found a piece of spaghetti in my penne and refused to eat there after...... I wish I could give it another chance

The people who lived on Lexington behind Frankies smelled garlic every night. Inescapable. I could smell it driving past.

Yes we did!  I lived in the small white brick bungalow directly behind them on Lexington for several years.

Sadly Art's appears to be transitioning into just another medical office. I hope they were able to flush out the bacon smell.

Interesting proposal for a small hotel on Charlotte ave, just South of the Kenilworth and East intersection (1921 Charlotte Drive ). Strange building rehab, no rezoning required. As a neighborhood resident I am very pleased to see commercial possibly creeping down Kenilworth. The Dilworth 'business district' could really use more business density.
