Excerpt:  "The Charlotte Observer reports Spandrel Development Partners and Atalaya Capital Management are working together to build a 26-story tower and a midrise building that will contain hundreds of apartments.  The project, called Radius Dilworth, is at Morehead Street and Euclid Avenue. The two buildings will contain a total of 626 apartments, according to the daily newspaper, along with amenities such as pools, fitness centers and a rooftop deck. Construction is expected to ramp up by the end of the year."

Do you think we'll lose the mature strees trees along Morehead, or will those be preserved?  IMO, Morehead is so attractive because of the shade of its canopy, and that takes decades to develop.  I really hope there's a way these new residences can join this desirable corridor without destroying a key visual asset that makes it so desirable.  Replacement saplings are in no way a real replacement, and may not be in many of our lifetimes.

Just a thought, but many of the willow oaks in the center city area are 75 - 90 years old and largely planted at the same time. Around 100 - 130 years old they'll start dying and falling over as they reach the end of their life. They aren't redwoods. They will die in many of our life times. This is already a common occurrence in areas like Dilworth and Myers Park during thunderstorms where the older trees are giving out and squishing houses or businesses. Being wedged between the road and a sidewalk isn't helpful for their lifespan either as it impacts the strength of the root system to support a 100 year old tree.

Unless you have a constant program of removing the older trees and replacing with saplings in phases, in 20 - 40 years they'll just have to cut everything down at once and it will be really stark. If you phase the approach, you could have the trees in front of this new building 30 year mature by the time you have to cut down the other trees on Morehead to replace with saplings. 

The very intersection of Euclid and Morehead this building is proposed for already has had some of its tree fall over in storms, including this one from April 2020.  Another tree in this storm fell onto the Girls on the Run building at 804 Morehead down the block. The time is now to start considering replacements or else the whole block will experience this photo over the next 30 years.

I completely agree with a phased approach, but the scale of what's coming to Morehead could radically alter the current look of the corridor within a matter of 5 years.  Our natural monuments going down during storms is a risk I know and live with - sort of like living in the California hills in spite of the risk of mudslides or wildfires.  Might be worth considering whether a tree replacement strategy must  necessarily play out in sync with land use replacements - so that we keep some measure of the canopied look even as Morehead transformations take place.

an interview with the NY developer of the 26 story apartment tower on E Morehead   and I agree this is a well designed project.  

New high-rise development planned in Dilworth neighborhood (fox46.com)

Now this is what I wish the Elling looked like.  I guess core uptown not yet ready for architecture this first-rate.  Maybe we get something of this caliber for the residential portion of legacy union?  If you want to tear down the barringer hotel for something that looks like this, then hell, I’ll  go fetch the wrecking ball myself...

I think Morehead> kenilworth/park rd>south park street car might need to happen

A Morehead to Atrium Health, to East, back to south/blue line circle would be nice.

It could be good, but once you're on east, might as well go down park to Montford and then South Park, could still circle back down Fairview/Tyvola

Yep - they better hurry and submit as the approval & permitting process takes time.  They might be able to secure Grading Permit while the Building permits are in progress.

after discussion yesterday at the UP meetup all agreed this would be the next section of Charlotte to have multiple high rises.  26 story apartment tower by Spandrel, two different 12 story apartment buildings, the Medical school nearby.   @QCxpatis already calling E Morehead Charlotte's new Park Avenue.   And I agree!  (and more in the works too)

Sad to see Atrium break the streetscape on their campus and not plant any trees in the planting strip between the sidewalk and the street.... I assume the city made an exception for the Hospital because..... Hospital. ... but it is sad to see one of the city's few planned  street designs fail.

For some reason Lincoln at Dilworth also does not have trees planted on Morehead

Referring to the original announcement post in the Economic Development thread of Saucy Brew Works at 501 E Morehead, renderings appear to show the abandonment of the former Caldwell Street right-of-way, which is great news. According to aerial from GIS below, the street had apparently already been abandoned. Another great streetscape improvement to the East Morehead corridor!

Edit: Rendering attached. You can see the curb radius of the original street being repurposed as 2 parallel parking spaces, but that's subject to CDOT approval.

 One of 3 apartment towers to rise on E Morehead.   (both my grandparents had their funeral here) ( since I went down memory lane my grandfather worked at the Wastewater treatment plant for Charlotte and lived a modest live and saved a lot.  On the way to my college graduation in Greenville his car broke down in Asheboro.  He bought another one on the spot  with cash and that always stuck with me. )  He made it to the graduation on time too!
