Is WalMart taking over Florida

It seems like every corner in Florida has some sort of WalMart on it. Now, they have new "WalMart Neighborhood Stores" This just seems like it is a slap in the face to all of the Mom & Pop stores they are replacing. How can they distribute to all of these stores. Does anyone know where they have distribution centers in Florida? I know they have 6 I just want to know where?

Thanks,

Mr. Pants

Welcome to UrbanPlanet Mr. Pants. I agree, there are too many Wal-Marts around, I love the 24 hours though.

But GO TARGET!!! WHOO!!

From the Wal-Mart Website

Wal-Mart's presence in Florida includes:

Stores, Clubs, Distribution Centers and other facilities (as of September 2005)

Supercenters: 123

Discount Stores: 50

Neighborhood Markets: 8

SAM'S CLUBS: 39

Distribution Centers: 6

Average store size (national average)

Supercenter: 186,077 sq. ft. with approx. 116,000 items

Discount Store: 98,079 sq. ft. with approx. 62,500 items

Neighborhood Market: 42,286 sq. ft. with approx. 38,845 items

SAM'S CLUB: 127,776 sq. ft. with approx. 6,000 items

Doesn't do much for answering your question huh. I want to know too now.

Dade Co. has a relatively small number of Wal-Marts (though that could be changing). If I wanted to go to Wal-Mart when I was a student at UM, I'd have to drive by at least 2-3 Targets before getting to the closest one! There were only (approx.) 3-4 Wal-Marts in all of Dade county when I started college in 1999.

The other metros on the other hand, are all pretty much saturated... :(

Land scarcity has a lot to do with that. There haven't been a lot of attractive areas with huge pieces of land to build them.

Most recently though, a new Supercenter opened at the Mall at 163rd Street in North Miami Beach. It's pink on the outside. A new one is proposed along NW 27th Ave near Dolphins Stadium.

Dade's first Supercenter was built in Florida City (I want to say around 1998), then came the Hialeah Gardens store along the Palmetto Expressway (2000), then most recently the Hialeah store (2005) and North Miami Beach stores (2005).

An announcement was recently made that they are planning to introduce the Neighborhood Market concept to South Florida, since land is so scarce and they can enter more areas this way. This could mean the demise of Winn-Dixie.

Brickell: #1 and #2 is probably the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club @ Galloway.

7 in Jax (but remember how spread out Jax is).

15 in the MSA.

17 within 46 miles of downtown.

Interesting note. The closest Wal-mart to downtown is over 6 miles away.

I'll break all the metros down since that Wal-mart site makes it easy.

Tampa:

9 in city.

20 within 20.01 miles.

2.87 miles is closest to downtown.

Orlando:

5 in city.

20 within 26.55 miles.

4.82 miles is closest to downtown.

West Palm Beach:

3 in city.

20 within 47.94 miles.

3.82 miles is closest to downtown.

Miami:

2 in city.

20 within 46.34 miles

1.5 miles is closest to downtown.

Tampa has more than Jax? I had no idea.

I know exactly what you mean. There is a certain warmth to a Target store that makes you feel like you're in a different place.

Wal-Mart has the 24 hour thing going for it though. I must say, they've rescued me a time or two. If Target were open 24 hours I would be there all the time!
