krazeeboi 196 Report post Posted October 22, 2005 There are some important things to keep in mind when looking at these rankings. When citing these statistics, each state is also profiled for 1) the actual percentage of MSAs reporting; 2) cities outside of MSAs reporting; and 3) nonmetropolitan counties reporting. SC's figures are 99.9%, 99.6%, and 100%, respectively. Here are some statistics for other states for comparison: VA: 99.4%, 97.2%, 99.7% WV: 96.3%, 83.3%, 87.3% NC: 96.0%, 96.4%, 91.3% GA: 89.7%, 84.8%, 82.8% FL: 99.9%, 98.1%, 100% TN: 100%, 100%, 100% Interestingly, NJ only reported for their MSAs and not for the other two categories. In addition, multiple reporting agencies were used for SC (10 in all). In comparison, NC used 5 reporting agences, GA 4, LA 2 (?), FL 7, and VA 4.

All these other regions get scared at the sight of something bad happening near them, here?, we're used to it, no big deal.... haha. Hey, without the violent crime and uncleanliness, what would the south be known for?

Mith242 70 Report post Posted October 23, 2005 I think Little Rock's done a very good job of cleaning up their city. I'm not sure if they had been higher on list at one point or maybe they'll drop out of the next one. It's certainly a lot better than when HBO was doing those specials on crime there. krazeeboi 196 Report post Posted April 10, 2007 You really have to take these rankings with a grain of salt. All states have different methods of reporting their crime data, and some, like SC and TN, do so more thoroughly than others.
wrldcoupe4 1499 Report post Posted April 10, 2007 Oh I agree... for example, Virginia's independent city set up hurts it in lists like these that don't take that into account.

NCB 1 Report post Posted April 10, 2007 I can't remember metro New Orleans being on the most dangerous MSA list anytime in the last few years. While the city of New Orleans is dangerous, the metro area is a polar opposite. Prior to Katrina, Saint Tammany Parish in metro New Orleans hadn't experienced a murder in more than five years, and other crimes such as assault, rape, burglary, etc. were also extremely low. Violent crimes in suburban Jefferson Parish, Louisiana's largest parish, were also rare, along with crimes relating to theft.
