According to Greenville County, here's what Greenville has going for it:

- Over $3 Billion in new capital investment in last seven years

- Greenville's MSA is #1 in the nation in European Expansions( Expansion Management Magazine, 2000).

- More foreign investment per capita than anywhere else in the U.S.

- More Corporate Headquarters than any other region in SC (SC Department of Commerce)

- #1 Worker Training Program in the U.S. (Expansion Management Magazine, Dec. 2000)

- Most Populated Region in SC

- Home to Michelin, BMW, General Electric, Robert Bosch, Lockheed Martin, Bowater, Hitachi and other quality Employers

- One hour to the Mountains, Three hours to the Beach

- Big City Amenities, Small Town Charm

You're right it's not in Greenville County. But that was copy and pasted from the County's website.

But it doesn't have to be in Greenville County to be directly connected to Greenville... It is in Greer and Greer is definitely a lot more of a suburb of Greenville than it is of Spartanburg. So in its context on the site it's accurately depicted as something that Greenville can boast.

Certainly Greenville has the rights to brag about it. I was simply pointing out that BMW is not located in Greenville County. I don't (and didn't) meant to start a pissing contest. If our region is to succeed we have to think as a region, and not as Greenville and Spartanburg, etc. That, however, does not mean we should ignore geography.

Hydrogen Fuel to Columbia has been compared many times as oil to Houston. And that says enough right there!! Then cola has government jobs, not to mention that Innovista is partnering with 3 German companies to produce Hydrogen Fuel. Does anyone knows what that means? COLUMBIA will be the leading* distributor of Hydrogen Fuel. Meaning other cities will depend on us for energy.

That's all great chief....but no one is driving hydrogen cars, and most likely won't for ten more years. :whistling:

I'm sure ICAR will have a component devoted to alternative fuel research, which means that it, along with the hydrogen fuel sector of Innovista, will have its work cut out for it. Building from the ground up is an exciting prospect.

Is this metro areas or municipalities?

In any case, of course GSP will have more housing starts since it's just that: Greenville AND Spartanburg. You need to break that up, chief. ;)

Myrtle Beach is starting to nip at the heels of the Big 3...

Yeah....That's not a high number if your counting the two together

Greenville, may be strong in terms of housing units from 1991-2001, but that was a different decade. Chas was only in the process of growing, and now it is growing at a fast pace. Like Mike said, 5500 units have built in the incorporated areas of the metro area last year, but there is an even better indicator which reveals who will break away: Charleston will lead the state in job growth for 2006.

This is from a P & C article from today's paper, and the link is located at the bottom. The Charleston region is projected to create 8,000 jobs next year and will again lead the state in employment growth, according to a study by USC. Charleston and Horry counties combined will create 11,180 jobs. The population growth of Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Beaufort areas is fueling the additions to many different job sectors. So there you have it...Charleston!

The Greenville News article in the business section of today's paper stated that phase one of ICAR will be completed by 2007; creating 1550 jobs averaging $52,000 salaries. Phase two is being thought about right now, but no concrete plans are set right now. It also stated that many "hot prospects" are looking at the Furman Co.'s buildings on the site that will completed sometime in 2007.

Great news for Greenville. I can't wait to hear more about the second neighborhood in ICAR. They said it might be anchored by an innovation center...

Here are some stats that might change your mind about which area will break away first:

Average Annual Housing Units Built 1991 - 2001:

  • Charleston --- 3,742

  • Columbia --- - 3,848

  • Florence -------- 656

  • GSP ----------- 6,027

  • Myrtle Beach - 3,835

Check the Charleston Chamber numbers for housing construction here

highlights show 3900+/- units in 2000 growing to 6949 for 2004. These numbers are just single family residential. For all housing units it is 5387 in 2000 up 8366 in 2004. Thats nearly a 70% increase in SFR units over a 5 year span, I 'd say thats a pretty healthy clip.
