I still hesitate to speculate if one of the major cities in SC will "break away" from the rest. It seems that each will continue to grow at a steady pace if the economy remains ripe for new development. Charleston has a good leg up on the others if things get tough because it is a major national port city. However, companies are also looking at other factors when considering relocating or expanding into new markets. It is nice to see the power that an alliance can create for the entire state.

that is true...but people are moving to Charleston because they WANT to be there. They aren't following opportunity. they are coming and making opportunity. The potential fly in the ointment is that people want to keep Charleston small and unencumbered...and all of this development may turn off some of the folks who are moving here for certain quality of life

I still say it may be too early to tell right now. Greenville County is the most populous county in the state, Charleston and Myrtle Beach are the fastest growing metros in the state, and Columbia is the largest metro in the state. All of our metro areas have some claim to fame. While Charleston is definitely preparing for a population boom in the near future, this will occur over the span of several years. Within that same amount of time, Columbia will have made significant strides with large residential developments downtown, and Greenville will have towers popping up all over the CBD. As of now, defined industrial niches are shifting towards Columbia and Greenville with Innovista and ICAR, which will be major investments for those cities and the state as a whole. We'll just have to wait and see.
