Urban Planning Career

Hi - I'm new to urbanplanet, but have been very interested in urban planning in my city for about a year. I'm currently investigating a career change, from non-profit fundraiser, to urban planning & policy with a historic preservation concentration. I live in Atlanta, so I'm looking at the Andrew Young Policy School at Georgia State. My question for all you planners and those who know more about planning than me, is how essential is a graduate degree in moving towards a career in planning & preservation? I appreciate any and all advice you have to offer.

Every job I find want's a master's degree in Planning. Which sucks for me, cause I do not wanna go to grad school. I'd say if you want a job right off the bat, you need a master's, at least in the public sector.
