Greenville Drive Baseball

Recommended Posts

I took my daughter to the game on Father's Day, and she surprised me with two tickets to a luxury suite! Free food and drinks, and the best seat in the house! :yahoo:

That sounds excellent! I bet the view is quite different from up there. I've only been up in one of the suites once (before construction was complete and with an escort, of course). Did you play catch with her on the field?

I would've loved to, but she doesn't own a glove, and she forgot to borrow one. (It's all her mother's fault). ;)

What city's downtown would really compare in terms of attractiveness and hospitality? Greensboro? Augusta? Charleston? I just can't imagine the league skipping the opportunity to capitalize on Downtown Greenville's pleasant baseball atmosphere. Logic says there is really nothing to worry about. They may be patiently waiting for the West End to develop around the ballpark before making the decision and announcement. The next question is when (how soon) the game would be played.

Just to clarify something...the soonest it could be would be 2009 as the SAL alternates divisions (a team from one division or the other hosts the All-Star Game every other year). The Southern Division just hosted the All-Star Game in Rome, Georgia. The 2008 All-Star Game will be hosted by a SAL Northern Division team, Greensboro. So, the Southern Division will get to host again in 2009.

So, the alternative choices for 2009 (all things remaining the same as they are now) are: Asheville, Charleston, Greenville, Savannah, Columbus, and Kannapolis (I think we can safely assume that Rome won't host it again so soon and Augusta hosted it in 2005). Out of these choices, I would imagine it would come down to the two teams with the newest ballparks: Charleston and Greenville, so our chances are pretty good. We'll know who was selected in June, 2008. <_<

:yahoo: 2010 is our year to shine! The SAL All Star game will be held at West End Field.

Well, color me corn-fused. I could see us hosting it in 2009 or 2011 as a Southern Division SAL team, but in 2010? Isn't that a year that the Northern Division should be hosting it? Has the SAL gone the way of MLB and said "screw it" to the idea of alternating leagues?

Just in from the drive...

Roger Clemens will be in attendance at tonight

Excellent news!

This brings a good number of people to town? I don't know much about the All Star game.

I would think it would atleast fill a few hotel rooms with spectators, not to mention players. Also, if nothing else, more exposure for downtown through articles in various newspapers about West End Field...

Not to mention that these games are usually televised (on CSS and the like - no ESPN coverage, unfortunately).

Most of the seats are usually filled by locals with the rest occupied by player's family/friends, various team's front office folks, some scouts, etc. So there'll be a few additional hotel rooms occupied, I would suspect. It's not like the Bass Master Classic or the US Pro Cycling Championships, though.

Just got in from the game. The Drive was down several points when I left in the 8th. Doubt we won tonight.

Couldn't believe. Ran into a business associate who lives in Atlanta. He and his wife came to Greenville for the weekend. They were at the game. Spending the weekend downtown at the Westin. Having lunch with them tomorrow. They were like kids in candy store as concerns downtown Greenville. :D
