Photos De Jour - Grand Rapids and West Michigan Area

Much of it has to do with historical significance, being the first government-funded art project in the country. (right?)

The other part is since it's on such a large scale and was one of the first publically displayed art projects in the city, it's become an icon of grand rapids. That sculpture, when you see a picture of that, that means Grand Rapids. And Grapids would not be the same without it. (LOL I just typed Grapids without realising it)

The environment around it also creates a nice canvas for the sculpture. If you walk around it, from each angle it almost becomes an entirely new sculpture.

Compare various angles:

There's many other angles as well, but were difficult to capture in a photo.

Actually I've taken a lot of influence from Canadian/British English.. where -ise is used instead of -ize. Also cheque, and colour rather than color. My best fried lives in Vancouver so it's hard not to pick this stuff up. What I WON'T pick up from him is his taste in architecture. He actually LIKES concrete bunkers, and has a strong dislike for glass buildings. o_O

When I stayed in Grand Rapids I talked with someone at the hotel about this piece of art and we seemed to agree that it was overrated and on too many things. In the gift shop there was all sorts of keychains and postcards with this thing on it. I don't get what is so amazing about it.

Could be worse

Joe Louis Fist is at the end of the page.

Also sold at Fred's.

I would really enjoy having a S&P shaker set of/with the Calder (and City Hall?). I would also like one of the Spirit of Detroit.

Now the JL Fist, I'll pass.

[likes the S&S Monument in DT Detroit]
