Photos De Jour - Grand Rapids and West Michigan Area

Amy and I went down to listen to the Carillon bells at GVSU's downtown campus. There weren't very many people wandering around, but there were some more people listening from their cars. It was great. I think we're going to start going every year.

We also wandered over to the blue pedestrian bridge. I took more photos I'll post later. I wished I'd had my tripod or monopod with me.

If you celebrate, have a Merry Christmas!

Edit:

Here are two more versions of the same shot.

Edit 2: Sad, sad, sad. I didn't have my normal CF card reader, so I tried hooking my camera directly to my computer to transfer the photos. BAD move. It takes forever to transfer, so I gave up. Then when I removed it, it said I only had 7 photos left (despite there being room for more than 1,000). After I took the 7, it gave an error and when I got it working again, all the photos were gone! So, no more night photos from this shoot. That'll teach me to leave my CF reader at work.

I agree. I really like the contrast between old and new in the last one. Plus, I'm a sucker for B&W photography.

I got a new book I've been meaning to post about that has a TON of awesome B&W photos of historical industrial sites and some great reading to go with them. I think there are a lot of people on this board who'd be interested in it. I picked it up as an impulse buy when I ordered my wife's Christmas present.

Also, the more I hang around the river, the more I think I'm growing to love the JW building. Sometime, I'll have to actually venture inside. :)

From above- Good old Houghton Lift Bridge, I crossed it just a few days ago to get some lunch.

Does anyone have shots of the following that they might want to let me used to make sketches for a class?

St. Andrews Cathedral

St. James Catholic Church

St. Adelbert Basilica

St. Mary's Catholic Church

One more interesting church spire that I am not thinking of right now.

A link or post would be great.

Is there maybe a thread of church pictures somewhere on here? I had no luck looking.

Thanks!

I think this is the thread you're looking for: http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/Churches...ids-t42822.html

I'm surprised Tamias6 didn't point it out, since he's the one who started it. :)

I found a cool flickr set taken by someone in the grand rapids flickr group.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/docksidepress...57600841579117/

In case you don't recognize it right away, it's a building at Michigan and Union (I think) that burned last year.

Sorry it's just a link, but I don't feel comfortable posting someone else's photos.
