Photos De Jour - Grand Rapids and West Michigan Area

No power at home still, no power in our office building downtown. Just hangin at the coffee house trying to get some work done.

I think I have about 10 trouble tickets in with AT&T right now for customer T1 circuits being down. Many areas are still without power. The batteries in many of AT&T's remote terminals started failing this morning, too.

So far, I haven't heard of any injuries, so that's great news. Hopefully it will be nice weather for everyone on the long weekend...

A guy I know was injured when a large tree limb fell on him at his house in the Grand Haven area. He's in serious condition at North Ottawa Community Hospital. Story

EAA has its Ford Tri-Motor at Gerald R Ford International Airport. I went up this morning and snapped a picture of downtown. I hope this is the correct size.

Off in the distance...

Oooo Oooooo Mr. Kotter Mr. Kotter!!!

Ummmmmmm, could it be Tassell Park and the Cascade Dam?

That tri-plane took off as I was driving down Patterson yesterday and scared the bejabbers out of me. I didn't expect something that big and slow and low-flying to come off the north runway.

I have no idea what EAA is, but this picture is freakin' awesome! Thank you!

EAA is the Experimental Aircraft Association. They hold a show, AirVenture, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin every summer. It's one of the largest flyins in the world (I go every year so I'll take some photos to post this year) For a week; it's the busiest airport in the world.

I'll try to post some more pictures over Grand Rapids shortly. We didn't venture west of Kalamazoo Ave, before banking to the right, so any photos I was able to capture was through the front window and not as sharp as I'd like.

In the pictures, the lake isn't visible and you're probably not seeing much beyond Coopersville. I should have set up my camera differently in order to focus further out, but was too excited to even think about it.

I was wondering though, aren't you supposed to have the ability to see the lakeshore from the top floors of Riverhouse...or the smoke stacks in Muskegon? Is this theoretical or with the actual naked eye? We flew at 1500 feet, the equivalent of the Sears Tower (over to 3 times the final height of Riverhouse?) and I could barely make out the lakeshore and on clear day.

Thanks for filling me in. I have heard of the Oshkosh Airshow. Isn't it the largest airshow in the US?

Spectacular shots! And I am so jealous -- a Trimotor. Is it one of the original Ford's? I understand that the Ford test track at Dearborn, across from Greenfield Village, was the old Ford airport and the location for the manufacturing plant.

One big impression from the pictures -- Grand Rapids is really "tree city." You can't make out individual buildings through the forest canopy until you hit downtown and the taller structures.

Wow! Fantastic! I've been wanting to see a view like this. Is that GVSU Allendale and then Lake Michigan beyond? Thanks. Any more pics?

I have a photo tour of downtown Grand Rapids you may enjoy seeing. (Also many other downtowns). Go to www.picasaweb.google.com/miklospogonyi

Well, I couldn't get quite as high as plee30, but I got this one:

And a couple more from closer to sea level:

These are kind of eery because it's in the middle of the day, I assume, and you don't see a single person downtown. It's looks like a movie scene from I Am Legend.

I was thinking the same thing (I Am Legend).

What time did you take these that there were cars, but NO people?!

There were actually lots of people, I had to ask them to move out of the way and stop obstructing my view of the sidewalk...

Without checking the time stamp, I'm pretty sure that was Sunday evening. There was quite a bit of post-Avenue of the Arts foot traffic over on Division. Other than that, the Fish Ladder was the only spot I visited that could be described as anything other than 'sparsely populated'.

[edit] Hmm... well I was right about them being from Sunday evening, but wrong about Division being crowded with pedestrians:

I guess I just scare everyone off. Maybe I need to switch my deoderant brand?
