What a beautiful day for getting out and getting some pictures and sunburn on the top of my head again, lol. I really should get a hat.

Since I had 92 photos to upload I thought I would make a new set for them, June 20 2009.

Here are a bunch of them:

Is the lime green building part of Art Prize, or some other photographic anomaly?

You're looking at the renovation of the River Cities building at 201 Monroe. I think the green is just new insulation they're installing, or something like that.

BTW, that's an awesome picture, smilesgr.

"excuse me, coming through..."

John, I must say, that's a really great photo, it says a lot very simply. Excellent capture.

I completely agree! Great photo.

Hey, golscorer4, when are you gonna post drawings/renderings/whatever from your big Monroe Ave project? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Thank you all very much! I truly appreciate the compliments.

I am uploading new ArtPrize photos along with others. There is an unknown one, until today, at the Downtown YMCA.

May take an hour or so for the photos to upload. They will be in the ArtPrize '09 set:

so I was on another public forum, and the topic was cities with underated skylines. One of the posters (not from here) mentioned GR, and then posted this shot. Every time i'm like whoopteedoo we live in a city with three damn buildings. Most people know my favorite shot is from the hill on the west side from the Ford Freeway, because you get the entire scope of the city. Why is this shot STILL the marquee shot representing Grand Rapids? Do you guys think we can get people to look at the city from another wider angle? Something that show's the density that really represents downtown? GR's skyline is taking shape and looking much bigger, and nicer than cities twice its size in some cases. I guess i'm just tired of this image and am bored with it. What do you guys think?

Huh. I've always thought GR had a pretty weak skyline compared to some other mid-sized cities, though some of our buildings are prettier. Think Dayton, OH. It has more tall buildings, but man, some of them are ugly. What would really help GR would be a tall building that's not right inline with the others on the river so the view from the north or south would be more interesting.

Agreed. I wasn't going to say it until someone said it first. We definitely have prettier buildings than a lot of other cities. I think the skyline is lacking. But let's build it up slowly rather than throw up a ton of hideous buildings. I've lived in Austin, Texas; Houston, Texas; Dallas, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri and Hsinchu, Taiwan so that's what I'm comparing our skyline to.

I think the picture that is used a lot is better than what I normally see and I like it.

i'm not by any means trying to say that the city is nationally prominent in terms of the skyline, all i'm asking is if anyone agrees with me, that the marquee shot on the river, that shows three buildings, has run it's course, and it's time for national media outlets, and local ones to use new views of the city. It may not have alot of hieght, but it certainly has more depth and density than this one demensional shot gives, I just think it's boring. So instead of comparing us to other cities, is anyone picking up what i'm laying down?

People just use what is readily available. The shot from the riverfront is easy and many people do it. If you want something better, there needs to be a flood of shots from other angles.
