That's great news, realistically it makes sense to want to renovate and keep the Chrysler Hall and Scope as useable structures.

New item up for design review on November 8th agenda. 332 Bute Street, marked as “new construction-infill development”. No idea size or scope, but something to watch.

This is in Freemason across from The Hague. DO NOT expect any major development to come out of this. Those folks hate development, and they’re the sole reason Freemason apartments are two 7-story buildings instead of one 20-story building. I’ll be shocked if it goes through in any iteration.

I've seen that plot of land advertised on Zillow. It's a very tight space, but I could see the city fitting a skinny apartment building into that spot. Didn't they plan to build something like that on Granby near Scotty Quix?

ETA: Just saw vdogg's second post. Never mind. Maybe a dog park or something.

Our city likes mid rise. Now I get the point of people saying we dont need high rise but the thing with high rise is that it usually give us a building that the city could be known by. Such as our hilton main or Dominion Enterprises Building. This seems fine for midrise but im just venting off steam after the planning commission is talking low rise for Macarthur development

Norfolk released their plans for the ARPA funds and put it in a dashboard for residents to review, select their choices and assign them a ranking.

On the planning agenda for the January 27th meeting is the former Park Place Methodist Church at 500 34th Street. Monument proposes to convert the old church into 60 apartment units and build 6 townhomes on the street-side of their current rear parking lot.

My guess is this would be about a 4 story apartment building. That's a good size development. This is what Norfolk really should be focusing on is improving these small pockets of urban mixed use neighborhoods.  35th from Gosnold to DeBree would make for a great urban pocket neighborhood with a two block stretch of streetfront commercial and apartments, with apartment building infill going in on surrounding sites. Give incentives to developers to build mixed income housing and startup commercial space rents to help the area be an incubator for small businesses and be an area where people can afford to live and work.

On the February 8th agenda for city council is a capital budget amendment to purchase 2700-2704 and 2707 Granby Street for $1,625,000. This is currently a strip mall that is anchored by a convenience store that has attracted some bad characters. There's been multiple shootings at this strip mall in recent months. It's also adjacent to M&G Army Navy Surplus which has a repeated history of drivers driving through it.

Would love to hear the cities plan for this lot once acquired.

Link to planning commission presentation on midtown norfolk. a lot of emphasis on walkability, mixed and active uses, pedestrian friendly, with Granby St as the core commercial area and the industrial parts really an extension of the emerging Railroad District, with lots of residential with ground floor retail and public open spaces interwoven into the fabric of the community.

Publix coming to the empty lot on 41st + Hampton Blvd.

“The ODU Real Estate Foundation is billing their project as an expansion of the University Village and Monarch Way. In total, more than 350 market-rate apartments will be built in buildings that top out at six floors with parking underneath, according to Norfolk planning documents.

“This was a blighted area. We have since turned it into an area that generates over $6 million a year for the City of Norfolk in taxes,” said Tara Saunders, the foundation’s executive director, during a 2021 planning commission meeting.

She went on to say that having a grocery store so close to campus would eliminate students having to take the bus to get to stores.”
