NoDa Brewing gearing up to reopen 'The OG' taproom

NoDa Brewing Co. plans to reopen its original taproom on North Davidson Street.

NoDa Brewing Co. is getting back to its roots.

The popular brewery expects to reopen its original taproom — dubbed "The OG" — in late July. That 11,400-square-foot facility is at 2229 N. Davidson St.

“We’re really excited to bring it back,” says Jacob Virgil, director of strategic development.

Expect that location to have a speakeasy vibe, with NoDa favorites on tap such as Hop, Drop ‘N Roll, Jam Session and Coco Loco. A series of Star Wars-themed beers — called The OG Strikes Back — will be available.

“The space just has so many memories. It has such a different feel,” Virgil says. “It’s where we started.”

Virgil says the long-term vision is to utilize more of that space. Right now, 1,350 square feet is dedicated to the taproom. He sees potential for an expanded taproom and private event space.

“We do have plans to make the OG much more than it was before,” he says.

Todd and Suzie Ford opened NoDa Brewing’s first location in October 2011.

Its flagship, 32,000-square-foot taproom and brewery at 2921 N. Tryon St. followed in October 2015.

The OG closed in July 2016 as construction ramped up in the neighborhood. It reopened in May 2019, but the pandemic shuttered operations at both taprooms in March 2020.

“As things slowed down, having one taproom was difficult enough. Having two was just impossible,” Virgil says. “The volume coming in the door didn’t necessitate it until now.”

He says sales volumes at bars, restaurants and the taproom remain down from pre-Covid levels but are finally tracking closer to normal.

“We didn’t feel comfortable reopening given the state of the macro economy and given the fact that the OG was actively a construction site,” Virgil says.

Sales of NoDa beers at grocery stores have grown during the pandemic and remained strong.

“As we’ve clawed our way out, grocery has still remained the giant that it was,” he says. “The last two years have been very heavily weighted on that business.”

NoDa Brewing is also in the midst of a $4 million expansion at its North Tryon Street location, which will streamline production and distribution capabilities as well as grow the beer garden and event space.

Really love these Camden NoDa apartments they look better than 90% of what is under construction in the inner city now.

Wow - can’t believe NODA is on the 4th/5th page in the UP Thread.  Anyway - does anyone know what is currently under construction adjacent to the Sugar Creek Station?  Looks like Renovating existing Buildings as well as some New Construction.  Also - midway between Sugar & Old Concord there’s an Apartment Complex under construction.  Anyone know what/who the developer is?  I hadn’t realized that Residential is beginning to creep between Sugar Creek & Tom Hunter Stations already.  That’s truly amazing to see.

This is a screen shot of part of the Asian Mall redevelopment brochure showing a lot of the nearby developments underway and soon to be underway. This portion of town is about to change completely and dramatically.

The neighborhood of NODA itself seems to have developed a bit of NIMBY problem. There are some exciting projects (finally renovating the other mill on 36th and some good townhome infill), but a lot of development is happening in adjacent neighborhoods.

Showing my friend who is in the apartment management business around town today.  Drive bys at the Camden NoDa and the new Avery Hall at 36th and N Tryon.   Avery Hall's is supposed to have a small grocery store maybe like a Trader Joes.

Similar to the neighborhood discussion on PM and the new Commonwealth development which technically according to Google isn’t within the PM neighborhood yet a lot of people describe it as such due to proximity. As per Google the developments near sugar creek station and south are all actually in the zone designated as NoDa despite not being in the “traditional” neighborhood.



This zone generally sees a lot of development projects. A spot I missed is the Camden NoDa Development: Very nice brick apartments. Saying NoDa isn’t getting much and surrounding neighborhoods are (by Google neighborhoods borders) is a huge overstatement because it really has a lot of large projects within its boundaries. Especially in the BLE corridor.

You're right dude. I was just thinking about the traditional neighborhood and all the anti-development stuff i see on its facebook group.

The Tryon street side of the light rail is really developing well. As is the area between Brevard and Davidson.

Yeah, that’s unfortunate. The irony of “gentrification” and NIMBY meanwhile that area already has high property values.

Yes, from what I understand it has along with the concrete plant across the street though I believe to different developers.

Hard to be too broken up about it. Both of the asian groceries stores were quite bad and the Asian Market on Plaza/Eastway is much better. Believe Le's Sandwiches is working on a place nearby.

Thanks for the brochure - it’s incredible the amount of parcels sold and under construction/future development.  That whole Sugar Creek Node around the Station could be transformed in the next 5 years from mostly industrial to heavily residential.

Theres 4,000 units, 700K commercial planned or under construction in this area. If anyone says not as much is happening they need to lay off the pipe.

A friend and local real estate person is helping to relocate all the businesses nearby. I do not find this deheartening at all, because the ownership groups refused to talk to one another and wouldn't do simple things like parking lot upkeep. The interior was an absolute DUMP.

went through NoNoDa north NoDa the Sugar Creek station or is their a new name I am not aware of yet?  Or maybe Sugaw district?  

Lots of development nearby now and more to come with the redevelopment of the Tryon Mall into a mixed project (apartments and retail) 

first shots of the existing Asian Square Mall then the activity along Raleigh St with the Platform, the Independent movie theater and new Pulte townhomes.  

Last photos of the new condo building and yes for sale condos the Galleries at NoDa. which looks like they have 4 units left to sell.

the Poe development keeps starting and stopping not sure what is going on with that.  

as for the grocery store several have been rumored in that spot and I know the developer Avery Hall would love to get one.  I have rumors of Amazon Go or whatever their store is called, Trader Joes etc.

Yes it is. The Company Store did operate a bit as a grocer during Covid shutdowns selling a lot of goods from the local farmers market they used to facilitate. They converted back into a bar later on. Cool owners, you should check one of the spots out.

Avery Hall of NYC is doing another apartment building right at the 36th St station and it is good looking. 7 stories 294 units  mainly brick

they are also doing the project at N Tryon and 36th with the spot for the 26.000 sq ft grocery store site no word on that yet.
