Seems like I read recently that Colorado was having budget problems, and has been traditionally a low tax/high growth State, but I can't remember the details. Don't get me wrong, Michigan is a higher than average cost state to do business in. Although, wasn't Michigan rated pretty well just 5 or 6 years ago as a great environment for business. The tax and business cost structure here hasn't changed that much, has it?? In fact, hasn't the single business tax gone down in that time period, and there are all kinds of tax incentives/brownfield tax credit areas available. Maybe it's all politics.

Here's an article about Colorado's situation, for which they just had a referendum vote recently (for you nerds):

Nice article Jeff, it really covers both sides well. I guess I just fall into the group that believes the government should have to share in the tough times with the rest of us.

 Proposal C passed, BTW, and D failed, so the taxpayers voted to allow the State to keep the tax refunds they were due over the next 5 years to get the State back on fiscal ground again:

Which, in essence, means they raised taxes on themselves. I guess I didn't realize that Colorado had lost so many jobs from 2001 - 2003 (over 100,000) and they still have not reached their previous peak.

I would hate to think of raising taxes in Michigan right now

Miss Granholm came in wanting to change the economic dependency on manufacturing, and move it to a new service based economy. Unfortunately she has been met with strong resistance by the state GOP that wants to run things the way they did under John Engler. Unfortunately thats just not possible anymore.

We need to take a good look at exactly what the government does and what it should and shouldn't be doing. This article talks about what New Zealand did to reform their government. Maybe not a perfect model for a state, but layoffs, program cuts, etc without changing the basic structure isn't going to fix the state governemnt.

This company is also.. cool I guess, with POTENTIAL big impact..

I saw in a press release they are looking to build "Angel City" a breeding ground for invention, research and development among other things. However, the release mentioned Nevada as the site for this "city"

Edit:

I emailed a gentleman from the company asking if he could disclose what they're looking to do in michigan... we'll see I guess
