All these tech companies need someone to manage their money, so eventually they do bring things downtown. Some of them could move offices directly downtown, if they establish a big enough presence.

Just curious: does anyone know if there's an index of the Biotech companies with HQ's (or major facilities) in the Triangle? Maybe the Biotech Center keeps something like that? I'm sure the recruiters for the economic development agencies in the region have some numbers to go on?

An interesting tidbit: 3 Nobel Prize winners have come out of RTP (the park itself). 2 people from Burroughs-Welcome (now GSK) and 1 from NIEHS.

I think generally those lists are incomplete as smaller companies usually get left off. I have seen lists that show around 600 companies in Orange, Durham, and Wake County with around 20,000 people in the biotech/pharma fields. I believe the universities are not included in these numbers.

CIIT is planning on building a collaborative campus between UNC, NCSU, Duke, and other institutes on property they own in the Park. CIIT is a smaller version of RTI and does great science nonetheless. I had heard about this plan for a while now but it looks to be moving forward. Hopefully they will use the Janelia Farm model to foster more collaboration between institutions.

In 2006 major corporate life sciences expansion/additions in the Triangle (major 3 counties) totaled $677 million creating 1550 new jobs. These numbers don't include universities or non-profit institutes.

Of note are Novartis, Eisai, Steifel Institute, United Therapeutics, GSK which were the largest movers.

Looks like Quintiles will be expanding here and adding 1000 new jobs. Major move getting this as Boston and some other cities/states (Kansas) were making a hard press.

These large plants generally build their own power generators and water systems so having a downtown location is just not practical-that's not even including the cost difference in real estate.

The Triangle is on the short list to get a $450 million bio-ag research facility formerly located in New York. UNC, NCSU, Duke, NIEHS, and EPA are all collaborating on similar efforts so this makes sense. There is pretty much nothing else in Granville County so this makes sense-its also on the route to DC (about 4-5 hours).

Great news. But it shouldn't take 4 to 5 hours to get to DC from Granville? It takes me 3 hrs, 15 minutes to 4 hours to drive that route. Even with extremely heavy traffic, 4.5 hrs should be the max.

I have heard buzz that they are considering moving their HQ to the Triangle as well.

Duke will be opening its new regional bio-containment facility this week. This may be a a key resource in landing this facility.
