A couple of weeks ago in the 'Economist' they had a section on the 'The New South', which was a great piece. In it they mentioned the Triangle was the country's 3rd largest biotech area, after Silicon Valley and Massachuttes. Combine that with a top 5 medical institution/University and a cost of living a 1/3 of the other two places and you have a great area  . Our weather is a lot better than MA too.

RTI will soon begin a $100 million facelift on their current campus in RTP although most of the new construction will be for other research areas including their social sciences section. I do believe the natural products division will get new digs as well.

It looks as if Shire will in fact locate a facility here-an announcement should come as early as mid-May. I have no idea of exact location or employment numbers akthough it could be as high as 500 new hires.

I also highly suspect that Solvay will land in the Triangle. Both Glaxo and Novartis also received government funds to develop a cell based vaccine development facility, similar to Solvay, and it would only make sense for them to locate close to other sites performing the same type of specialized vaccine development. Having a pool of trained workers will play a big part in their decision, and if i'm not mistaken, NCSU and/or Wake Tech have training programs already in place.

NC is considering building a Biofuels Campus in Granville County. This would be a great site as its close enough to RTP but has a strong rural component necessary for this endeavor. I see the recent addition of the Southern Institute's facility and expansion of Novozymes causing this to gain steam.

article?
