After finding some websites filled with new developments from the Shreveport/Bossier City area, I figured it would be a good idea to start a development thread for the Shreveport/Bossier area.

Who knows, it might even help bring in forumers from north Louisiana, or southern Arkansas.

Shreveport Convention Center & Parking Garage

Located in the heart of the downtown commercial district, the Shreveport Convention Center (SCC) has been designed as a multi-purpose facility poised to accommodate a variety of events including, but not limited to: exhibits, trade shows, consumer shows, banquets, receptions, conventions and meetings. The 350,000 square foot facility will provide state of the art meeting facilities for medium sized regional and national conventions & will soon become the largest public building in the City of Shreveport. The primary functional spaces include: One Exhibition Hall with a total of approximately 100,000 square feet, One Ballroom with a total of approximately 18,000 square feet, and Ten Meeting Rooms each with a total of approximately 1,500 plus square feet.

Hollywood Casino

The $230 million project includes an ornately designed, 17-story Hollywood style art deco hotel. The hotel features a towering 60 foot lobby, the world's largest chandelier, Hollywood themed restaurants and a seamless "grand entry" to the largest riverboat on the Red River.

The 170,000 sq. ft. pavilion, hotel and riverboat are connected via air conditioned skybridge to a 1,584 car parking garage, also designed in the art deco style. The garage, located on the north side of the Texas Street neon bridge, features 21,000 sq. ft. of retail space on the ground floor. On the south side of Texas Street, is an additional 21,000 sq. ft. of retail space, in the Red River District featuring a promenade under the bridge.

The southern retail building features a rooftop sign patterned after the famous "Hollywood" sign in the Hollywood, CA hills. The Hollywood development added 1,700 jobs to downtown.

I was curious do the casinos there make up a big part of their economy? I drove through Shreveport once years ago. I don't know what I was expecting but I was a bit surprised how new and modern parts of the city I saw seemed to be.

Yes, the casino's and the gambling business makes up a large part of Shrveport/Bossier's economy.

There are many major casinos and hotels in both Shreveport and Bossier City, and there is the horse racetrack near Bossier City, inside the Interstate 220 loop.

The gambling business in NW Louisiana makes a great deal of its money off of gamblers coming from Arkansas. Most of whom are from the Texarkana area.

I had known there was some gambling there but guess I didn't realize how big it was there. I usually hear more about Tunica and Oklahoma. Although I live rather close to Oklahoma in my area of the state so it doesn't surprise me. Guess I just thought I would have heard more about Shreveport/Bossier City like I have heard about Tunica. How long has gambling been there and what was the area like before it?

I dont know a whole lot about the Shreveport areas' history, but I know that the gambling business up there is somewhat of a new thing.

From what I know, the first casinos to pop up around Shreveport and Bossier City were riverboat casinos in the 80's. And after they became very popular to people within 150 miles, major hotel/casinos started popping up. Before the gambling business became big, Shreveport was simply a river town, and the central city of the Ark-La-Tex region(It still is today), so trade was a major part of the economy. I really dont know much about Bossier City's history. But the major thing that was in Bossier and still is there today, is Barksdale Air Force Base, which cover 22,000 acres. So I'm guessing that most of the econmoy was centralized around the base, until gambling came into effect.

Shreveport is Louisiana's 3rd largest city with a population of 200,000, and a metro population of around 450,000.

What are the new Shreveport Bossier Developments in the suburban area, in particular South Shreveport?

What has happen to South Park Mall area? What about Line Avenue. What about the North Market area and the Cypress Lake area. Has there been new developments int the Cross Lake area

I know that there is a small housing boom going on in suburban Shreveport, and that there is considerable growth going on there. The only other area I really know about is Cross Lake. I know that there is a small condo/housing and retail boom going on there. I will be up in Shreveport in a few weeks, so I'll be able to check it out for myself.

Shreveport pop should be at least 300K in the city by now

Shreveport's city population has gone through many fluctuations in recent years.

It went from 202K down to 195K, then up to 199K, then back down to 197K, and I believe the estimate for 2005 is 203K in the city. The city might actually be at the begining of a small growth period, according to some population projections.

Shreveport has many good things going for it. It is by far the central city in the Ark-La-Tex region. It dominates the area in terms of tourism, business, population, etc.

Again the main reason Shreveport pop has not match other cities is becasue a lack of oportunities there. Shreveport should have at least 300k in the city plus a good Chamber promoting the city. One of the best meals I ever eaten was at the Ernest Restaurant and Freeman and Harris there.

Yea, the Capt Shreve was a major loss to the city.

Another problem Shreveport needs to take care of is crime. Shreveport's murder rate is pretty high. I know that it is higher than San Francisco's and many other cities that are two or three times as large.

I know that downtown the convention center will open officially tomorrow. It is the second largest convention center in the state. Only N.O.'s is bigger. I'm so proud of Shreveport. Not too long ago the city's growth was stagnant but now businesses and homes are sprouting up everywhere especially in Bossier City. Now all they have to do is bring their crime rate under control.

I started a development type thread for Shreveport a couple of months ago, but other than the major developments, it was hard to find good info. NW Louisiana is one of the areas that I really hope UrbanPlanet gets members from. There is alot of great stuff going on up there right now.

Driving through Shreveport and Bossier City on my Arkansas trip, I saw new office development after new office development after new office development. And further outisde of the cities residential areas and homes were popping up everywhere.

BTW, how much Shreveport related news do you hear about in Texarkana,(I know some areas of Texarkana get the Shreveport local news) because it would be great if you had any occasional updates on city news.
