Back on topic....

Ate at TGIF last night with some friends. We got there right at 5:00 and had an hour wait. I was okay with it since I had eaten a very late lunch and wasn't extremely hungry, so we waited.

I got the Fridays Sampler so I could try a few different things and the ribs on that thing were dry and nasty. The sesame chicken strips and fried shrimp were great, though. My wife's steak was supposed to be medium-well and it was well-well-well-well. It was WAY overcooked and nasty. She sent it back and finally got her corrected steak long after we all had eaten. I was about to tell the manager to keep it and take it off the check, but he returned and siad he wasn't charging us for any of our meal. He didn't have to do that but it was very kind of him. Our friends still had a $50 bill to pay, though, since their food all came out the way it was supposed to.

All in all... the manager did his part to correct the problems, and while not making us pay for our meals was all fine and great, it still just didn't make up for the so-so food. Perhaps with time they'll iron out all the wrinkles, but for now we're steering clear of the place.

That sucks that the food was bad. I want to go, but I am not in a rush, especially after your experience. I still have not made Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro and have been wanting to go back to Cantina Laredo. When you have kids you rarely get away from them for dinner, so you kinda have to pick what you want most! Sushi also sounds awesome. We have made Fuddruckers at LA Downs and LA Boardwalk. It had been a while since I had been to one, but from how I remembered them ours are not like the others at all. The others seemed like a sports bar atmosphere, these seem like semi-fast food. That being said, I was not impressed with the LB one, but the LA Downs one was really awesome.

Friday night we were going to go to Cantina Laredo while we were shopping on Youree but there was a frigging 45-minute wait there!!! I was shocked, we waited that long when the place was brand new... many months ago. So we ended up heading downtown to Monjuni's instead and it was good. I also haven't eaten at Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro but I want to. I'm a fan of Copeland's and if you add cheesecake to the mix you've got me sold. :) Actually I love their white chocolate bread pudding, that's to die for. I hope the Cheesecake Bistro has that as well!

Sucks about the Boardwalk Fuddruckers. They're owned by the same person so I hope he gets it all together. Surprisingly, though, just about 1 mile down highway 80 from the Boardwalk there is a billboard for Fuddruckers... at Louisiana Downs! lol what's up with that?! It's not like he's competing, it's the same owner. He needs to be advertising the Boardwalk location near the Boardwalk and he's already advertising the Louisiana Downs location along I-20.

And yes, for instance the Fuddruckers in Grapevine... it's not a sports bar atmoosphere but it's a little less fast-foody if that makes sense. They also have a Blue Bell ice cream parlor inside which I was hoping our locations would have. Having not been to the Boardwalk location I don't know if they have one or not but I doubt it. I know the Louisiana Downs location doesn't.

And we're both still fiending for some Cantina Laredo... we miss it a lot, particularly their queso with beef in it. It's different from most places and DAMN good. I'm a fan of their shrimp chimichangas. Mmmmm! :)

By the way, on another subject, I could have sworn I saw Quincy Carter get out of a Chrysler 300 in downtown Shreveport today and walk to some building on Texas Avenue. But isn't he in rehab in Florida!? Might not have been him but I looked twice because when I saw the guy the first time I thought to myself "was that Quincy Carter?" But I doubt he'd still be wearing Dallas Cowboys accessories and this guy I saw was.

Okay, I'm glad they voted down the Thrifty liquor... however, the intriguing part of the story is that the writer mentions "a multitude of other businesses" were also voted on...

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.d...sJj5DjQ3RDdM%3D

You know, while I don't see Thrifty as a decent business, as they're generally always rundown and attract vagrants who hang out in front of them, I still hate how here in the "Bible Belt" the hypocrites from the nearest Baptist congregation (in this case the Calvary hypocrites, and I was once a member there so I know what I'm talking about) always flock to the meetings to voice their opposition. It's for that reason why Bible Belt cities (ie. Shreveport) are often held back. How can you be a progressive city when the religious fanatics are blocking everything? Hence the reason it took Hooters 20 years to finally be able to dole out a franchise in this area.

I'm just tired of the hypocrites holding us back. In this case the hypocrites being those who are holier-than-thou and knocking down the door to the church on Sunday morning to pray forgiveness from a week of adultery, drinking, weed smoking, shooting people, cursing at everyone they encounter, and so on. Okay, rant over... back on topic, BRIAN.

As far as the other businesses, the Thrifty was just to be built on an outparcel of a larger project so it could be anything. Hopefully the planned tenants aren't dollar stores, payday loan places, nail salons, etc.

Finally, The Times is going to "get with the times." They've purchased a new press and will finally release a more normal-looking and feeling newspaper in 2010.

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.d...NGNEWS/71212027

I know it's an improvement and it's going to cost $15 million, but it's still from 1991. Any ideas of how old the presses major newspapers use are?

I would guess that old, if not older. Those machines can last a very long time. The current press The Times uses is from 1961. So even if the "new" one is from 1991, it's still 30 years more modern than their current press. As expensive as those machines are, I can't imagine even a major, major newspaper updating more than once ever 20 years or so. I'm betting the new Times will very much resemble The Dallas Morning News.

Well, I hope their photos come out better. It's always frustrating to see most of their color pics blurred or "out of phase"...

I believe that's one of the biggest reasons for this, besides just a higher quality paper in general. It honestly should be light years beyond what they have now, and I'd be willing to bet the photos look damn good. I'm in total agreement, with their current press the photos always look like crap. I'm glad I don't shoot for them, I'd be kinda pissed everytime I saw my photos in print.

That's good, though I'm trying to recall in my mind if the quality of The Dallas Morning News is the same as USA Today. If not, I believe it's close. I can't recall.

Still, this is great. :)

that's awesome news... from what I remember the pictures looked like dookie in the paper! I didn't realize how bad it was till I moved up here.. photos are bright clear

For some reason I can't click through to the city's website right now. Must be a server error or something.

Anyway since I can't see it right now, where is this new CVS being built?

The hotel is a welcome addition. My company has been looking to stop using the Clarion for quite some time, but they still like to keep people in this part of town and that new Holiday Inn Express at the Auto Mall doesn't want to cooperate. It will be nice to have another choice, and I do know there are other hoteliers interested in this same corridor around Kings/70th/Youree/Bert Kouns.

The proposed CVS is on the southwest corner of Ellerbe and Flournoy Lucas. I think the name of the hotel is a Hyatt Place Hotel??

If this hotel comes to fruition, it will join Cambria Suites (which will hopefully be located on E. Bert Kouns, next to the Toyota Dealership... i think groundbreaking is supposed to be Spring '08) as another contemporary option for hotel guests.

Yeah I've been wondering about Cambria Suites... glad to know there's at least an idea of when a groundbreaking might take place.

Oh cool! Yes that area is badly underserved... would be very nice to see.

Hyatt Place? Sounds nice! We currently don't have any Hyatt properties, I don't believe.

From an excerpt of some obscure travel blog during this past July...

In Shreveport, six new properties are slated to open. Holiday Inn Express, Candlewood Suites, and Staybridge Suites are all part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group. The same group operates the Holiday Inn chain of hotels. Candlewood and Holiday Inn Express are both set to open in the first quarter of next year. Staybridge is set to open in the third quarter. Homewood Suites and the Hilton Garden Inn are both operated by the Hilton Family. Hilton Garden is slated to open its doors in the spring of 2008 and Homewood will open later that year. Cambria Suites, owned by Choice Hotels International, hopes to be open in January of 2009.

Proposed Taco Bell on Southern and Pierremont...

http://www.ci.shreveport.la.us/ZBA/BAC-7-08.htm

Proposed restaurant in the Michael's strip Center on Youree (formerly occupied by Gumbo Daddy's)...

http://www.ci.shreveport.la.us/ZBA/BAC-9-08.htm

Before the ZBA updated their site to have links I saw that the site was 1400 ft north of University or something, so I got on Google Earth and did a distance and it came to that shopping center. It's good to see because that shopping center has had so much turnover already. I wonder what it's going to be ... the company applying is Saks Restaurants LLC. ? I Googled the name and came up empty-handed.

Also it's good to see that the hotel proposal passed the MPC. I'm ready to see it built. I ate lunch at that Subway over there the other day and I drove behind the shopping center, and the site is nice and big. Can't wait to see it filled with a hotel. :)

I haven't been over that way in awhile... have they started site work on the hotel already?
