Pictures of Shreveport

The Summer of 04' I got the chance to see the brand new Bass Pro in Bossier ; that's really cool how it was built on the banks of the Red River ! I sure was impressed ! The Louisiana Boardwalk was not complete at the time ; sorry I missed it . I know some said the project was "bold" for that area (like it may not work). Well, I commend whoever decided to go thru with this . I think Louisiana Boardwalk is a great idea and I hope it suceeds for many years to come !

I now have so many photos of Shreveport - and many, many more to come - that I feel it is just best if I link to my Picture Trail galleries. I hope with these photos, I have captured the full essence of urban Shreveport. Soon I will have a gallery dedicated to suburban Shreveport/Bossier.

Fantastic photos, supkof!

My favorite skyline shot would have to be this one:

And I really liked these urban photos:

Great job on all of them!

Thanks, dude.

By the way, I got some more cool urban and suburban photos today. The very second-to-last photo I took was downtown just about 20 minutes ago. I was taking it, and I noticed two homeless guys sitting on a planter box and one had his hand in the air... I believe he was flipping me off but I really won't know until I get the photo downloaded. Anyway, I drove around the corner to get my last photo of the day, and right after I got it I looked up and bam... there they were, running toward my car screaming at me, "Hey you, who you takin pictures of!?" I floored it and got the hell out of there. I've been confronted by homeless people before, and some of them will stop at nothing to get whatever they want from you. Afterall, they have nothing to lose... getting arrested is probably the best thing that could happen to them, because at least then they'd have a roof over their heads and three square meals.

On the off chance that these guys had a vehicle, I carried my butt out of downtown and onto the freeway. I was home in 15 minutes, which is FAST from where I was. I jumped out in traffic and drove 70-80 the whole way through to the city limits. I'm not about to take any chances just to get some pictures. I don't normally carry a firearm with me, just my trusty knife. Not a good way to stop 2 guys with nothing to lose from beating you silly for your camera and money. As a matter of fact, a nightclub manager was hit in the head with a brick and mugged by a homeless guy in that exact same parking lot just a couple of weeks back.

ANYWAY, this said, I took 170 more pictures today so I've got a lot to go through. Hopefullly I'll have them ready this week. With the work week coming up, there's no telling when I'll get a chance to go through them.

PS... the photo that nearly got me beat down was similar to the last photo from the post above that you said you liked. It has that Chicago sign in it, but also has part of the skyline in it, including the AmSouth building.

By the way, my run-in with the homeless guys wasn't the first time this weekend I encountered someone who didn't want to be photographed (apparently a lot of people have something to hide!) The photo above that you liked, with the old church in it, has a Mexican guy walking by with a shirt covering his face. When he saw me taking the picture, he covered his face. Then he took the shirt down and gave me a "go to hell" look. In another area, I was taking a picture of some old buildings and this guy was walking down the street, but when he saw me, he turned around and ran off in the other direction. I always try to be careful when taking pictures in questionable areas, but apparently even staying in the car isn't careful enough.

^Wow, it sounds like you had some interesting(there are a few better words than that to describe them) experiences while taking those pictures!

I've had quite a few experiences while taking pictures around New Orleans, though I've honestly never felt like I was in serious danger. Just like any native, I'm know where not to go, what not to do, how not to act, etc. Most of the people that are mugged and beaten on the street while taking pictures and things of that nature, are tourists. But I carry alot more than a knife with me when I'm in New Orleans, because no matter how familiar you are with the city and the people, you never no what's going to happen.

No doubt. You're no stranger to the crime rate in Shreveport, so you know we have the same concerns as far as crime goes. And the thing is, I grew up very street smart. My parents still live in the old neighborhood I grew up in, and I don't even feel safe visiting them. I used to walk those streets at night as a teenager, so I learned real fast what not to do. I guess over the years since I've left that place I've let myself forget how dangerous the city streets can be. The thing is, it was daytime and there were people all around, but with people who have nothing to lose, they don't care if there's a cop standing there.

By the way, I got a photo of that south Shreveport water tower today... the one you have a picture of. As I sped by it going about 80, I stuck the camera out the window and snapped a photo. I wonder how it turned out!. I'd been out south of Shreveport getting photos of the newer suburban areas and of the new Provenance TND that's under construction. I probably drove 150 miles just around Shreveport and Bossier today. I know I burned well over 1/4 tank of gas... maybe even closer to 1/2.

I grew up in the French Quarter as a kid, which isn't exactly dangerous, but I spent a great deal of my time in the inner city, and I had quite a few friends who lived in the 9th, 5th, and 17th wards, so I wasn't a stranger to crime in the city growing up. I walked those streets at night as well, and for the most part never had any problems. Though I have been held up at gunpoint while walking through the Bywater neighborhood late at night after picking up some groceries. I visit these neighborhoods every so often nowadays, but never un-armed.

BTW, your alot more daring than me! When my car window is down, I'm scared to have my camera anywhere near it, even if I'm stopped! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your pictures as well!

In this set of pictures, you see a row of clubs along Commerce St. in lower downtown Shreveport near the riverfront. Among these pictures is a building which used to be called James Burton's Rock N Roll Cafe (James Burton was one of Elvis' guitarists) but is now called 'Maggie's Hangar.' I did a little investigating and found out that 'Maggie's Hangar' is a fictitious club created as part of the Ashton Kutcher/Kevin Costner movie, The Guardian, which just wrapped up filming in the area.

Enjoy... and remember these pictures when you see the movie. ;) I'm not sure when it's being released.

Here are some pictures I took last night of the Horseshoe Hotel in Bossier City, as well as a few I took around the outside of the Boardwalk. It appears that Gimme Sum Fresh Asian Grill is getting ready to open next week and I love thier Scion. I actually hate that style of Scion, but I love the way they have it decorated... sushi on the windows. :D MMmmmmmm sushi!!!

Yes , nice pictures !

I am going to have to see the Boardwalk in Bossier . That is an impressive area ! I think putting a Cinema next to Bowling is a great idea . I wish BR had one of those glitzy high-rise casino hotels on the riverfront .

The historical-looking Commerce St. looks cool too ! But with all those power-lines overhead , I would be a nervous wreck if a Thunder-storm was in the area. ha

Welcome, woob! I've only been a member here sicne March 1 (coincidentally, that was also my birthday) but have really grown to love this site!

As for what's being built across the road from the old Hamel's Park (I assume you mean the old amusement park and not the Hamel riverfront park,) that would be a new development consisting of an apartment complex, retail space, and a new Circle-K store.

By the way, did you realize the old Hamel's Amusement Park is being used as a church now? http://www.riverparkchurch.net/

I thought it was a little odd that someone wanted to turn an abandoned amusement park into a church, but hey... whatever!

Anyway, good to meet you, woob!!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I wasn't talking about Island Park, I was talking about the land across 70th Street from the old Hamel's Park, at the base of the Jimmie Davis Bridge. It's supposed to be all commercial near the road, including a Circle-K store, with apartments in the rear. Yes, believe it or not, more apartments for that area... and Fairfield Property Management will be the management company.

I just noticed on the Shreveport Times wesbite, there is a photo gallery put together of the local nightlife. After looking through this gallery, I realized it barely touches on the nightlife... there are so many hotspots they completely ignored. Oh well, it's a cool gallery anyway:

Was that Coolio in picture 7?

Here's a new series of Shreveport photos. Please note that these are not mine, and they belong to Robb Willcox of Shreveport and were found at this webpage.

^Wow, great pictures, Brian! I really like the skyline views, especially the first one. That's probably one of the best pictures of the Shreveport skyline I've ever seen. Great shot!

Yes, I was so happy to come across those. I wish I'd been the one to take them. I just recently realized I know the head maintenance guy for one of the taller buildings downtown, and next time I see him I'm going to beg him to take me up and let me take pictures from the roof. I only see him every now and then, so I hope I run into him soon.

I just got back from my Doctor's office, and her office is pretty high up in the 9-story Willis-Knighton Pierremont hospital in south Shreveport and she has an excellent view down Youree Drive toward downtown. I'm going to try to talk her into letting me take some photos from there as well. Then I can get a shot of the skyline with the Horseshoe Casino Hotel as well, from about 10 miles or so south (about the same distance as from Indy Stadium.)

For the record, that skyline photo instantly became my favorite as well. It's not often you see shots of the skyline from 10 miles or so out. I can actually see the skyline from Haughton, which is 12 miles east of downtown, but since there are no hills out that way or freeway stacks I can perch on safely, I just can't get a shot from out there.
