I went to the gypsum mines on a class trip when I was probably 7 years old or so.. it was pretty cool if i remember correctly.

I've been to the mines in walker before it was very interesting, but i wasnt aware of the one in kentwood, on the airial photo it shows it where that old cool looking ugly yellow silo tower thing was, that always intriged me I would drive by that in e.paris on my way to work and see this tower probably 150 ft. in the middle of a wasteland field but its in the middle of the city of kwood. I always thaught that was a fire tower. they tore it down last year and it looks they are trying to develope it now.

That tower was part of the old Georgia Pacific Mine I believe. They just recently closed that mine. I grew up in Kentwood and also remember it rising out of the fields.

I've been in the Alabastine (Michigan Natural Storage) mine many times. Great fun.

what are all these mines? Are they places we can go explore on our own? Not private property?

Private property, but now most of the mines are used by GFS or other food distributors because mines that deep usually stay a constant fridge temp. It greatly reduces operating cost for the business using them.
