OK. In the first batch (franklin Street).

Pic #4. Great shot of The Prestwould Condo and Rhoads Hall, but why can we not see Brandt Hall?

Between pics #7 (Commonwealth Club) and #8 (200 block of West Franklin) there's a square with red x.

Pic. #12. Great shot of the old Baptist Church at Adams and Franklin next to the Jefferson Hotel. The Hotel doesn't seem to know what to do with the building.

Pic. #15. These two houses near the corner of 1st on Frankklin had their 3rd stories lopped off in the 1960s.

That's all for now. :)

I'm waiting!

Comments: I hope everyone can figure out what set of pictures I'm referring to!

#2. Great contrast with the ruins foreground and the Ethyl Headquarters above on the hill. Some tourists think Ethyl is the State Capitol.

#6. Hundreds of polluting birds out on the rocks mid-stream in the James. I don't think I'd want to kyack or swim in these waters!

#9. I love this depiction of the canal boat oarsman. Note the naked flag polls in the background!

#11. Nice fountain, but no running water, of course! Grrrrr!

#13. The center portion is the original News Leader Building on 4th between Grace and Franklin and is flanked by the recent Times Dispatch additions.

#16. This attractive building on 5th between Franklin and Main is (or was) the YWCA.

#17. This is the Hancock-Wirt-Caskie house build in 1803 at n/w corner of 5th and Main. Until about 3 years ago, there was a wonderful, cozy, snug bookstore in the cellar off the Main street side.

#20. Some say this interesting building at n/e corner of 5th and Main was originally a hotel.

#'s 21 & 22. Great old restored houses on 5th between Main and Cary. I believe Edgar Allen Poe lived. as a youngster, in the white house, but could be wrong about that. He did live somewhere in the vicinity as a ward of Mr/Mrs Allen.

Wonderful set of pictures, Coupe!! More, please. :)

I'll comment on the great downtown set as soon as I get some free time.

thanks burt... I'll be heading out tomorrow to take some pics. Any special requests from anyone?

You've gotta hit Vistas since there is chatter that something is going on there. I'd also like to see the PM site again. I've heard that they are really flying on this project. Finally, (and I know that it is kinda out of the way) I'd like to see the airport. That construction is one of my favorites going on right now, but no one ever gets photos of it. Anyway, if you can make it over there to take some pics of the new terminal going up...I'd love you forever...I say that in a total manly, heterosexual kind of way.

do you mean the Library of Virginia (on Broad st) or the Richmond Central Public Library (on Franklin)?

library of virginia (courtesy of rcw):

richmond central library:

If you mean the Library of Virginia, and if so, it was Craig Hartman of Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

Here's some more info on it:

library of virginia

If you mean Richmond City's central library, I'm not sure of the architect. I know that it replaced an earlier, art-deco influenced library.

I also agree that Richmond could use an architectural program at one of its universities. I'm surprised neither VCU nor UofR have established architectural programs.
