Major announcement on Monday for Anderson Michelin Plant?

Monday's announcement will mark the latest twist in a convoluted case of smokestack-chasing.

DaimlerChrysler began looking for a location for a $750 million, 3,500-worker Sprinter plant several years ago, eventually narrowing its choices to two tracts near Summerville and near Savannah in a site search code-named Project Bluebell.

In that instance, Georgia emerged as the winner in October 2003, but the company later changed its mind, blaming currency fluctuations, the shaky U.S. economy and unfavorable market conditions.

Savannah officials have denied any interest in competing for this resurrected, scaled-down version of Bluebell.

A big jobs announcement could be a timely shot in the arm for Gov. Mark Sanford, who has taken heat from political opponents about the state's high unemployment rate. Sanford is scheduled to be in the Upstate much of the day Monday, partly to attend an economic development announcement at a Michelin plant in Anderson.
