What is surprising is that Wilson is # 2 and Cheatham is # 4. I would have thought other counties would have been in those spots. I live in Cheatham and you would never no that it is # 4. Not a lot of growth here but some. Most of the homes are very modest.

The 6 top counties all surround Nashville. I guess that is a reflection of the growth going on in the State now.

I'm surprised that Fayette County is so high. At one point, it was one of the poorest--wealthy cotton plantations with a predominantly poor black sharecropper population.

The Commercial Appeal had an article about that this morning: wealth flees Shelby County and moves eastward to poor Fayette. I know that Fayette was the fastest growing population-wise during the early 90's, and that's almost all "wealth-flight."

I am somewhat surprised also, but not shocked that Cheatham is 4th. Down here in the southern part of the County we are seeing some growth and it is generally somewhat upscale. However, most of this area is developed with 1 to 5 acre, single home lots and there is not a lot of room for future growth, but what is coming in is more dense. The County recently approved rezonong for a 200+ acre subdivision in the Ranchettes area which will allow one house per acre. Kingston Springs will soon see development of a couple of nice condominium projects, so the world is catching up with us.

Cal Turner, the Dollar Store billionaire, recently bought a farm down here.

Cheatham County has been a well kept secret with some of the most beautiful scenery in the mid-state. But people are just now beginning to discover that.

Anyone interested in picking out and putting together Middle and East Tennessee lists?

I grt confused as to where the three divisions divide.

The Tennessee River divides West from the Rest. The time zone EST to CST divides East and Middle. That is a quick and dirty. That are a few that are a little in question, but you have a general idea. Hardin is generally in West Tennessee because it forms a straight line N/S, even though most is east of the Tennessee River. Marion and Sequatchie are sometimes in East Tennessee because of association with Chattanooga.

Somerville and Oakland would be the important towns in Fayette County. Selmer is in McNairy.

Yeah I meant Somerville, I often want to put Selmer in Fayette for some reason, I think its because they both start with a S. Thanks for catching my oversight. I put in Oakland as you suggested too.

I looked up the 3 grand divisions and there's one duplicate, Cumberland is on the middle and the eastern list...

According to the list I used, Cumberland is in the East Grand Division

Here's the link I used

This brings up something that I've wondered about for years: Which section is more populous? I've always heard that it's E. TN.

I would imagine East TN or possibly Middle. The East does contain 3 fairly major metro areas but Middle Tennessee seems to have more medium sized cities outside of the Nashville Metro.

I did a county by county for the 2000 census...now these numbers are just based on my memory, but I remember...

East Tennessee » 2.2 million

Middle Tennessee » 2.0 million

West Tennessee » 1.4 million

And of the county split up, I did a quick look...

West Tennessee: 21

Middle Tennessee: 40

East Tennessee: 34

Recap: Household income

3 of 21 West Tennessee counties are above the state average (14.2%)

12 of 40 Middle Tennessee counties are above the state average (30.0%)

5 of 34 East Tennessee counties are above the state average (14.7%)

When I'm bored, I'll do a complete breakdown of the stats, including populations of each division and each county.

I used to live in Hawkins County a long time ago (just west of Sullivan County and Kingsport). Just across a very steep and continuous ridge to the west of Hawkins County is Hancock County, the poorest county in Tennessee by a wide margin. It is truly the armpit of Tennessee economically. It's amazing what a role geography can play in all of this. That ridge makes the county almost inaccessable and thus very poor.
