Mills/50

Fresh Market, which has a store in Mills Park, is closing 15 stores nationwide (about 9% of the total.) This follows a closure of 13 stores last year.

While this round of closures doesn't affect any Florida Fresh Markets, it does look like the chain has a tough row to hoe going forward. With all the new options coming to town, and with Amazon going all in with Prime discounts just up the road in WP, it's reasonable to wonder just how effectively the store at Mills and Nebraska will compete in the next year.

It is truly the end of an era. Wally's, the dive bar where hundreds if not thousands of Orlando high school students took their first drink and the go-to spot for pre-gaming a pub crawl, has closed:

UPDATE: Scott J reports that John Morgan ("For the Lushes!") may be interested in buying the property:

This is hard to believe - I thought Wally's would ALWAYS be around. I remember running my fingernail along the wall in that bar and tar just curling up like black wax. You can't get that kind of accumulation just anywhere - it takes dedication. It will be missed.

Perplexed about a new zoning change permit for “Race Trac Fern Creek” - no address that I can view.  I wonder if the Wawa is reverting back to the previous plan...If it’s an error or if they are building somewhere else on that road.

Yup.

Although the retail strip isn't what it once was, the "Rainbow Block" along Mills Ave. is still home to the Zebra Coalition and the LGBT+ Center.

The Center has undergone quite a renovation of late (it has really spruced that stretch of 17-92 up) and now they're adding an ongoing presentation of the area's LGBTQ history.

Of course, the area's community first became visible in 1975 when Parliament House became one of the nation's earliest gay resorts only six years after Stonewall. There was, however, quite a bit of history even before that (some of our FFO's had GLBTQ folks they tried to hide from polite society with varying degrees of success) and intrepid folks like David Bain and others have done a remarkable job of making it accessible.

There's also quite a gayborhood nearby in the Colonialtown/Fern Creek area, including the home of City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.

Just a hop skip and a jump from the Not-A-Wawa on Colonial Drive is Chan's Chinese Cuisine, a long-time fixture in the neighborhood.

Even longer than you may imagine. Long before Chan moved in, the building started out as a Western Sizzlin' (in those days, after church every Sunday, if you didn't go to lunch at Morrison's across the street, you probably went to WS.) It then had a good run as Orlando's only in-town Shells (mmmm shrimp pasta...)

Anyway, Bungalower reports Chan's is up for sale for $3 mil. The "Kobe Steak Coming Soon" sign should pop up any day!

7-11 invested a lot into the Thornton location.  IIRC they just put a new awning to match the more recent designs.  The Mills/50 has the stopgap rehash of the 80's design including the old 80's signage at the street.  Its possible Ferncreek /50 was the spiritual sucessor.  The drycleaner might be on borrowed time considering that's prime real-estate.

7-Elevens are now franchise-owned so my guess is the Mills/50 owner chose to close rather than do the upgrades. Given the difference in traffic between the two, that probably makes sense.

I wonder what will replace it.

I’d also love to know why TP had Amazon Lockers and then they disappeared. Those were the only ones I’ve seen placed outside the building so maybe that was why.
