Colonial Photo & Hobby is celebrating 65 years and still going strong. From the time I was a little kid, building little Plasticvilles along my brother’s HO line meant plenty of stops after swimming at the Y and lunch at BEEFY King or Frisch’s. Saaaaaalute!

Ice Cold Auto Air is officially rubble today. While it had long past its prime, it is a little disheartening that the replacement will be a ubiquitous Starbucks. *sigh*

Did they save the sign?

It was also briefly a Chastain’s and, for those up for Advanced Level Orlando Trivia, also had the same owners as Herb’s, a drive-in at OBT and Colonial that had the world’s most incredible onion rings (Herb’s also had the monkey on a horse sign like the one seen in the pic above).

Bugger. That sign always screamed DOWNTOWN when I was a kid. That, and the Orange Court Motor Lodge sign on North Orange.

I love the Orange Court sign - thankfully, that one was saved. The current Auto Air sign is a replacement from the original which had a full round speedometer face and the arrow gyrated wildly. It will be interesting to see if anyone takes it.

The bigger question for me will be whether the Morse collection will ever be seen. It has always seemed as though they’re not sure exactly what they want to do with what longtime Morse head Hugh McKean left them.

In order to get the collection before the public (neon, after all, is a popular art if ever there was one), I wonder if a long-term loan to UCF might be doable and a placement for some pieces in Creative Village. A tie-in with OUC might help mitigate costs of electrification. Maybe it’s just a dream, but I sure would like to see it happen.

Three small businesses in the neighborhood that are still going strong after all these years: Lamp Shade Fair, Balloon World and the Orlando Flag Center:

Another day, another poo spill of Mills Park sewage into a nearby neighborhood, lake and on to the Orlando Urban Trail.

I’m curious if the lack of comment by City Hall and their city commissioner is due to a miscue by the reporter or on the part of the city.

It’s paywalled so I don’t have all the details, but the OBJ posted last week that the Race Trac at Colonial & Fern Creek is off ... and that apartment developers are potentially eyeing it?

Was it Racetrac or Wawa that was supposed to go there?  Or was it Kobe?

All of the above!

I know Jernigan will hate that a classy outfit like Race Trac isn’t moving in. :-) It does bode well for the ‘hood, though.

Ha I was going to say - I’ve given Mills/50 a ton of criticism on here for getting a lot of local accolades for painting dumpsters that are wedged between two “massage” parlors while areas like SoDo and Ivanhoe are making it rain investment thanks to their respective sugar daddies.   But credit given where credit is due.   This is great news for Mills/50 and for the new Starbucks going in across the street.
