Poinsett Highway

The West End would be a suitable location, I'd think, for a large corporate office park or building- hmmm, like South Financial- since there's so much available land in and around the area. Are our civic leaders trying to steer office development to the area?

I think they are definitely trying to steer large office buildings or complexes away from the West End. There is plenty of available property in and around the heart of the CBD for such buildings. I hope to see more companies actually make the move from the suburbs to downtown very soon. How could a move like that ever be bad for business?

While these big offices would be great to have downtown, I would really like to see Poinsett Highway redeveloped more pedestrian-friendly, with plenty of shops, condos, apartments, hotels, and parks to make it very attractive. Of course this will never happen overnight, but a solid master plan should be drawn up now and a beginning to its implementation should happen immediately.

The old Post Office at the intersection of Furman Hall Road and Poinsett Highway is getting a nice face lift. Anybody know if there's anything coming to that building or is it just getting a face lift by the owner in hopes of attracting a new tenant? I seem to recall there being a pawn shop there in the past? It doesn't appear to be there anymore.

The pawn shop specialized in tools and the owner was pretty old. I hope something does go in there that would be great.

Is that the little white building with a single door and a window on either side of the door / awnings? Cute building. Could be a great bar or restaurant spot.

No, this isn't that one. I know the one you're talking about though..and you're right. That little stretch of store fronts there have so much potential. This is what was the larger white-washed brick building (click here) with large glass windows. It is located on the opposite end of the same parking lot as the Goodwill. They've covered over the brick with sheets of foam and are now putting stucco over those, similar to the method used on the Family Dollar/Snap Shot/Crosby Stills buildings. It's looking as though the inside is getting some fresh coats of paint, too. It's going to be nice when they're finished. I'm just curious if anything new is going in there.

^ Oh, OK, I know the one now. Thanks RT! Haven't seen it being redone. Good to know. Since you mention the Goodwill building, it has a good deal of potential to be redone, having that large curved wall with the large windows. Sort of deco.

If any of you have kids, then I'm sure you've seen Disney/Pixar's "Cars" by now. I've seen it dozens of times since it appears to be the only thing my son will sit and watch for any length of time. There's a line from the movie that really sticks out in my mind: "Hey Luigi! This new road makes your place look like a dump!" It was after that moment when the fine folks/cars of Radiator Springs began to take pride again in their businesses and started to give them fresh coats of paint, clean them up, fix the lights, etc. Yea, it's only a movie, but it says a lot about pride.

I wonder sometimes what a complete new road surface and re-done sidewalks/landscaping, improved signage, and traffic signals suspended from arms along that stretch of road would do to serve as a catalyst/impetus for businesses along the road to spruce up? I'd sure love to see it happen.

That is what exactly needs to happen. I noticed signalized intersections in the city's newly annexed areas are upgrading to arm suspensions.

The "purple porno shop" near the Rutherford intersection (where the Gooder 'N Good restaurant was YEARS ago) has recently closed and the building has been painted a less atrocious color.

good sign for a brighter future. Rebuilding Poinsett, one building at a time.

Conversely the "pink porno show" I assume it has some porno stuff, never been there myself was getting a newer fresher looking sign. I surprised that business is still there in full view right as you exit Cherrydale Shopping Center near Jack in the Box.

It got more than just a paint job...that building was gutted and renovated inside and out. It looks TONS better. That old purple and orange (no offense to Clemson fans) was horrid.

Amen to that! That old Post Office/Pawn Shop is looking great! The rest of the strip mall next to it appears to be getting some paint to match what's been done at the old Post Office/Pawn Shop, too.

Are you talking about Pandora's Boxxx ? It'd be nice if that place were to receive at least a coat or two of "earth tone" paint so it didn't stick out so much. I don't mind a business such as this being there, I'd just rather it were more inconspicuous so my kids don't some day ask me about it.

I agree. I'm kind of confused how those business stay in business sometimes and at other times you hear about the law going in and shutting them down. I'm not sure why those kind of businesses seem to go out of their way to look "slinky" they could use various "skin tones" in the paint job, etc.

I still can't believe they got away with their old commercials..."Isn't it time you've been in Pandora's Boxxx?"
