The Grocery Store Market in Northwest Arkansas

Okay I'll put this in the subforum because I'm not sure if there will be enough interest in the general Arkansas forum. I'm trying not to overwhelm anyone who are trying to focus more on developments and such. But anyway Arkansas Business is reporting that Wal-mart increased it's lead in the grocery market in Arkansas. In second was Kroger and third was Harp's. Kroger and harp's are pretty close in the number of stores. Especially since I don't think the report takes into account the new ones they've bought or opened recently. But Krogers still does doulbe the amount that Harp's does with around the same number of stores. Probably because a lot of Harp's stores are located in small rural towns as well as the northwest Arkansas metro. I'm wondering if Harp's has what it takes to eventually get to second in the state. They're mainly based in northwest Arkansas, although they do have some stores down toward Hot Springs and Russellville. But they've made no moves to get into the Little Rock market or southern Arkansas for that matter. Kroger obviously has more resources and could more easily spread out. Although I think what would really make them more of a force in the state is if they moved into the northwest Arkansas market.

I'd really like to see Kroger come up here and try to open a few stores. I know most people would say that Harps and Wal-Mart dominate the grocery scene up here, but I think one would be supported especially in Benton County.

I'd like to see a Whole Foods Upscale Market up here as well.

I'm not sure if Harps would be willing to go to places like Southern Arkansas with the exception of Texarkana. Little Rock is already supposidly getting a Whole Foods and another Supercenter and they already have a few Krogers along with some other major grocery chain.

Yeah I don't think harp's is really looking to get into any big populations areas. I think the main reason they're in northwest Arkansas is because they originated in Springdale and there's no competition aside from Wal-mart really. But overall they seem to stay in smaller towns overall. But they do seem to be trying to take advantage of being in the northwest Arkansas market.

Little Rock also has Wild Oats, which is really nice, over on Rodney Parham. Terrys' Finer Foods on Kavanaugh in the Heights caters has gourmet foods. There was a gourmet grocery store on Chenal, Brannan's Market, which flopped (poor location, prices) but theres's supposedly a nice upscale grocery going in Pleasant Ridge soon.

The Central Market grocery stores we have in major markets in Texas are incredible, I just don't think NWA or LR is big enough to merit one.

Ironically, LR was glad Wal-Mart was trying to make an entry into the grocery market in West LR. Their prices beat Kroger and especially Harvest Foods by a decent margin. Most LR area Kroger stores are much larger than Harp's stores. NWA's best chance is for Albertson's or Kroger to buy Harp's. I wish Albertson's or Tom Thumb would buy Harvest Foods in LR, their prices and variety of products are not competitive.

Super Targets have great grocery sections, BTW. I'm hoping LR will get one, especially in the area where University Mall stands if it's torn down.

I hadn't really though about a Super Target. Although I'm not sure if northwest Arkansas would necessarily get one soon. Albertson's tried to buy Harp's out a while back ago but the family wouldn't sell to them. I'm familiar with Wild Oats out west. I would like to see them of Whole Foods come into the area. Although I'd hate to see them put Ozark natural Foods out of business or something. Then again they'd probably be more interested in Benton County anyway. But I'm still hoping another upscale place like the Market at Pinnacle Hills opens up again. Even if I had to go all the way up there to check it out every once in a while.

Super Targets are becoming more and more throughout the nation. I remember Wichita getting one or something like that. I think Little Rock might be able to merit one in the future. I don't think NWA has the population nor the interest for one.

BTW, I didn't know until today that you were a scientist, that's pretty cool.

I don't know if I'd say northwest Arkansas doesn't have any interest in a Super Target. I think it's more the fact we aren't big enough to really have something like that yet. I think there are quite a few people who's just like to have another store to go to aside from Wal-mart and Harp's.

Really that's quite a profession. I was reading on the Global Warming Thread and read that. I guess that in a way is a scientiest, I guess it could be better prefered to as a specialist.

Considering I do research and write articles on it, I prefer to consider myself both. It's all relative, though. At least I know how to interpret data.

Mith, it's a physician that takes care of cancer patients and administers chemotherapy.

Interesting. I don't think I have what it takes to be a doctor. My hat's off to those who can. :D

I'll post the info here since I can't find where we've talk about Wal-mart before. Has anyone heard about the new ads against Wal-mart trying to get people of 'faith' to stop shopping at wal-mart and even recites a Bible verse in the commercial?

Yeah I have.

What's even worse is that people have been protesting outside the HQ because Wal-Mart says Happy Holidays and not Merry Christmas.

Yeah they're really in a now win situation. If they push the Christian aspect then non-Christians are offended. And if they don't push it enough then Christian fundamentalists get mad.

Hey guys new to the area (8months) new to the site. Anyone hear about NW Ark ever getting a Trader Joe's/Sprouts/Whole Foods? I've tried the small natural grocery store on the corner of 71b and Walnut. It's not bad. Unfortantely have had to do most grocery shopping at Wal-Mart. ick. Haven't tried Mary's yet. Any suggestions? Also what is with the trend of the terrible fast food chains up here? Need to get some local joints going.

I think this area is ripe for a Sprouts or Trader Joes type place. Plus in regards to the fast food chain chaos, It's time to get some local joints going up here in Rogers similar to Fayetteville using some more local produce and fresher foods. Need better options up here. Oh and I don't really need to reply to what is wrong with Wal-Mart....hehehe
