Weird I don't recall seeing that at all. Was it in the 'local' paper section? We have the Northwest Arkansas Times in ours down here. But I think you have another 'local' paper in yours in Benton County.

May'be.

We get the Benton County Daily Record in ours, and it had a whole article on it.

Ah, that's why I didn't see it. When the Arkansas Democrat Gazette moved up here they bought two papers, one in Washington County and one in Benton County. You guys get the Benton County Daily Record in your Dem-Gaz up there and we get the Northwest Arkansas Times in ours. So even if we both get the Dem-Gaz we could actually see a little difference because of those two different sections of the paper.

I see.

I do enjoy the Daily Record, it's very informative with the community and development, much more than the Morning News.

Since this topic seems to have become more of a topic for religious issues, particularly Jewish and Muslim. Has anyone been keeping up with the race riots down in Australia? Something I really wouldn't expect down there, but there are a lot of rioters going after and attacking anyone who looks to be of Middle Eastern descent. Really horrible to hear about this type of behavior.

It makes me sick and sad at the same time.

I know of a few Muslim Pakistanis from Pine Bluff at my school.

Really? Wow, I certainly don't remember anyone from that part of the world living in Pine Bluff when I was living there. That's interesting to hear. And also it's amazing Johnny actually posted here on the NWA subforum! :D

Yeah, I got lost :-)

 Just kidding, seriously it is nice to see you over here Johnny.

Yeah, I got lost :-)

Oh, and by a few, I mean 4. Three of them are related. So, it's more like 2.

Still it's nice to hear that it sounds like Pine Bluff is getting a little more diverse. It wasn't too diverse when I was living there. I also hear that although it took a while they're also getting a bit of a hispanic population there too.

Hey, thanks for the welcome! I'm sorry it took me so long to get back here to respond; I have to squeeze my computer time in between caring for my two little boys, and my two elderly in-laws.

I live in Bentonville, on Miller Church Road. To get to our house, we have to turn onto Peach Orchard Road, right through the middle of the construction on the new Lowe's. If anyone has information about what's coming in the adjacent shopping center, I would really be interested to know.

Thanks again, guys.

We'll have to check with Matt, he's much better with the Benton County news than I am.

Can't say I've heard much about the Shopping center up there. I know that the Lowe's is going on up there, but other than that, I'm not sure.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but U of A officials have secured a 418 percent increase in funding for African American studies that should give a needed boost for the program and serve as a building block to increasing minority-group enrollment on the Fayetteville campus.

The new funds will pay for two new assistant professors with annual salaries of $ 55, 000 each. Plans are to hire a specialist on West Africa and possibly a professor whose spe-cialty is blacks in politics. Other investments include $ 40, 000 for a Swahili instructor, $ 50, 000 for fringe benefits, $ 10, 000 for maintenance, $ 9, 500 for the graduate assistantship, $ 15, 000 for supplies and equipment, and $ 50, 000 for scholarships.

Fulbright College Dean Donald R. Bobbitt said the college also wants to bring more prominent blacks to campus next year through the program, which has been

Just wondering...but why the heck is diversity such a big deal? Also, the thing that really pisses me off about this is that...if the University came out and said "we secrured a 400 percent increase to study for white american studies" crap would hit the ceiling. Like all those scholarships for minority...if they had scholarhips scrtily for white's there would be some major lawsuits.

I don't want to get into a race debate, but I think the reason there aren't special scholarships for white's is because there's NEVER been racial descrimination against white's in this country. The scholarships for minorities are a guarantee that all races receive equality in education. That's all. It's not some big scandal or conspiracy. It's called "civil rights" which I support.

The Chancellor's main goal is to increase minority enrollment at the U of A. Arkansas is somewhere around 20% Black, there's nothing wrong with the U of A wanting to get the Flagship University of the State to match those numbers. I think it's wonderful that the Chancellor is working so hard on making opportunities for minorities in Fayetteville better.

So its fine for you to say you think anti-white discrimination (AKA "Affirmative Action") is "wonderful" but anyone who disagrees is a terrible, terrible racist.

Thanks for helping prove my points.

What's your deal, hu? People from other races deserve the same opportunities that white people have been given. You think that people from other races are the source of crime and such.

I think its all well and good to spend money on some of these studies, but I wonder how much of this diversity training stuff has further seperated us as a country. African-American studies? I think not. Its American studies from a black (oops, not PC. Watch out for Farekahn) perspective. But IMO the more hyphenated we get, the less solid this country gets. I am an American. I have no idea what a Irish flag looks like, and the only German flag I could recognize would be the last flag on the planet I would fly. Yet "Mexican-Americans" not only know the Mexican flag, but have it plastered to theyre car. The "African-American" division of America occasionaly flies some African Nations flag, not sure which one. I have no problem with pride and education of heritage. But I have one sincere question. What happened to the melting pot?
