McAlester

McAlester is a very picturesque little town, much like Hot Springs or Fayetteville but smaller. It is the economic center for southeastern Oklahoma and began as a coal mining town settled by Italian immigrants. The suburb of Krebs has a distinct Italian heritage and is home to two famous Italian restaurants, Isle of Capri and Pete's Place. The latter is a favorite of Reba McEntire. The area is home to Robber's Cave State Park and the Ouachita Mountains.

McAlester is home to the state penitentiary, which was a major location for the film Return to Sender, which will be released soon and stars Connie Nielsen and Aidan Quinn.

The Ouachita Mountains are a great area to explore, photograph, or scenic drive.
