Grand Rapids to ban strip clubs?

Morality and legal issues aside, doesn't this Mark London character have anything more classy or creative to do with his money besides porn? There have been some amazing developments in downtown Grand Rapids taking a lifeless boring city into a thriving and fun place to hang out. A city growing up does not mean it has to have a red light district and just b/c you oppose it does not automatically label you a right wing conservative. As a female, I personally believe that those places are degrading to women portraying them as objects to lust after with no brains or substance. On the other hand, women do make a lot of money from men stupid enough to throw their money away on teenage behaviour (ooh, a naked girly . . ooh) What do these women do when they lose their looks? Ah, the debate could go on and on. Ten bucks says if he gets the thing built, it will be way too big and too costly and will fold anyways . . . .look at what happened to Opus . . . .

Welcome Sunlover38! Although I've yet to see a strip club go out of business :P

That is a sad statement about our society . . . if you would permit me to get up on my soapbox . . . .how about a homeless shelter or a home for abused women? Something beneficial to the human race? Why does GR need a strip club????????????????

How do you think Mark London got all that money? Sex unfortunately sells.

Does anyone here know that Mark London is a very highly decorated retired police officer? He used to be the department chair of the Criminal Justice program at CC. My wife had him for a prof. when she was in college.

I had him as a proff way back in 86 or 87 . .had an eye for the ladies even then. . . . :shades:

Let me see... It's legal, capitalism, supply and demand. Did I mention it is legal?

Let's face it folks, business people are in business to make money. I don't know of many for-profit homeless shelters or homes for abused women.

Now I will get off my counter-soapbox.

Joe

Last thing we need is another homless shelter downtown...I'd rather have a strip club for the businessmen than some more bums.

Even with the morality issues aside, there are no good reasons to support strip clubs. Good for convention business? Please be serious. By that logic we should offer brothels tax breaks and free parking.

It would be fabulous if the city could restrict strip clubs. But, right now, we simply can't afford it. There are bigger fish to fry.

Everyone knows that they are legal and maybe this guy is just giving the peoples what they want, and maybe he will do some great things with the money he makes from his strip club. But strip clubs also tend to have rather undesirable effects on the surrounding properties that must be taken into account. No one wants to see a part of the City fill up with strip clubs and nudy booths and the like. The effects would not be good.

On the other hand, the more I think about it, the less I like the idea of a City or any governing entity completely banning something it doesn't like. This seems like it could be a slippery slope. Could it lead to restrictions on other stores that some people feel hurt the community? Gun shops? Bars? Tobacco stores?

It is quite a quandry, that is for sure.
