Its kinda cool to see a company headquartered here and product built in Greensboro in global ads. HondaJet has its own ad but its seen in some of its automobile ads as well.

In addition to production of jets later this year, Honda is planning a $20 million 90,000 sq ft service center on its 133 acre campus at Piedmont Triad International Airport.

rendering of the planned building below. Construction will start this summer and will be completed by Summer of 2013. Also work began this month on the company’s first full-motion flight simulator, which will be used for pilot training. The device will be based at PTI. The jets will have many amenities. Passengers will be able to use their wireless mobile devices, such as a smartphone, to control the jet’s cabin lighting, temperature, music and window shades. And they’ll be able to use them to monitor the jet’s altitude, air speed and flight track.

The new aviation building (rendering) at Guilford Technical Community College's aviation campus in Greensboro near the airport will include a flight simulator and labs. The groundwork has been laid to attract an aviation and aerospace cluster around PTI.

PTI is finalizing plans for $350 million in projects part of the plan will include a taxiway over a future strip of I-73 in Greensboro. The I-73 taxiway will cost between $40 million and $60 million and would provide access to 1,200 acres of land that is owned by the airport. It would be kinda cool to see a big plane rolling on a wide bridge over I-73.

Don't forget Greensboro has the mid-Atlantic air cargo FedEx hub. PTI is becoming a hub for industry and the taxiway is need to access thousands of acres of land owned by the airport for future growth. PTI is quickly becoming an "aerotropolis" and a hub for aviation and aerospace industries. Honda Aircraft Company has its world headquarters and a jet manufacturing plant at PTI.

More detail about the PTI's plans. The taxiway over a future section of I-73 will be 214 feet wide, almost like a mini tunnel. Thats pretty unique. No airport in NC has a taxiway going over a highway and its also a rarity nationally. There are only about a couple of examples around the country where an airport taxiway crosses an interstate. Construction on that future section of I-73 will begin in 2016 and be completed by 2018.

Currently the airport has three runways but in the longer term future PTI also wants to build a fourth runway.

But the goal of the taxiway is to open the airport up to the thousands of acres of land it owns so industry can come in. Current there is only 200 acres that's accessible so if a big company were looking to expand here and they needed 300 acres, PTI wouldn't have land ready for the company. PTI also plans to buy even more land and grade existing land it owns. PTI has to be ready for the next HondaJet or the next FedEx.

TIMCO at the Airport also announced it will be hiring up to 300 people and build two new hangers.
