Broad Street work to begin

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

The Broad Street Improvement Project, a $3.2 million face-lift of the downtown area, is in its initial stages. The project is designed to make the street more pedestrian-friendly.

But that won't come without some discomfort for people who frequent the area, as workers widen the medians and sidewalks, narrow the street and add traffic-slowing devices such as speed tables.

The Broad Street Improvement Project is part of the city's projected $273 million redevelopment of the riverfront and downtown areas. The redevelopment is expected to increase the residential and retail viability of the downtown and riverfront areas.

Long-term planning is for the development of off-street parking and residential buildings, such as loft apartments, in the area between Broad and the Phenix City riverwalk. The project is designed to complement other developments -- The Phenixian and Phenix Rising, two high-rise residential and retail developments north of 13th Street on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River.

The area of Broad Street affected by the current work will stretch from just north of the Holland Creek Bridge to 13th Street. The construction will narrow Broad from its current six lanes to four lanes, while widening the median. Speed tables will be installed to slow traffic on the street, which is one of the city's primary north-south arteries.
