Perkins Rowe Town Center

Here is a fantastic looking new development currently under construction in suburban Baton Rouge.

The Perkins Rowe Town Center will include residential buildings, office towers, street level retail, and a medical center.

I really like the looks of this project.

Is this somewhere off Perkins Road? Looks interesting. Of course, I'd much rather see it built downtown or in immediate proximity to LSU.

The perkins rowe project is going to be a mammouth retail center in south baton rouge. Hopefully they complete expansion on perkins road into a 5 lane highway soon, the traffic in that arear is already desperate!

NCB do you know the status of the river place condominiums!?!

I thought they were supposed to break ground by now. By far that was the most exciting project in my opinion

Developer close to building new office tower in downtown

Developer and property owner Mike Wampold has long planned a huge tower on what is currently the parking lot at his City Plaza building, on Fifth and Florida streets downtown. He has been trying to line up tenants for several years. Now, he says he is in discussions with a two big tenants that could make it happen, and deals might start closing as soon as the end of this year. The tower would be 12 to 14 stories over five floors of parking, making it roughly the same scale as the former Bank One towers. It would be between 260,000 and 280,000 square feet and cost about $52 million. Wampold is finalizing his selection of architects (Washer Hill Lipscomb did the preliminary designs several years back), and he says, under the best-case scenario, the building could break ground as early as June.

Construction on Riverplace Condominuims is supposed to start in January. I was a Baton Rouge last week, and the site looked like it was getting underway for construction in the next few weeks.

Galvez Building

The recently completed Galvez Building

Another major building in Capitol Park is the 12-story Galvez Building. The Department of Environmental Quality is housed on Floors 1-10 while the Public Service Commission is on Floors 11-12. It features a one-story Conference Center and an area for vending machines, breaks and dining.

Groundbreaking occurred on Thursday, February 15, 2003 on the Galvez Building, which houses 950 state employees. The cost was $35.7 million, with construction time just over two years.

The new building is named for Spaniard Bernardo de Galvez, one of Louisiana's most colorful governors. When Spain owned most of Louisiana, Galvez drove the British from Baton Rouge in 1779.

The 6-story Galvez Garage includes 1,900 parking spaces plus the Main Street Market, with 22 retail spaces for restaurants, produce, food, and other goods. The cost of this structure was $15.6 million.

Occupancy occurred in the spring of 2005.

That's a nice, solid looking building. Does anyone know what replaced the old Inn on the Lake/White House Inn/Lakeshore Statler Hilton which was on the lake (riverside)? It was destroyed in the early 90's.

Claiborne Building

The LaSalle Building is only one part of a major project to consolidate much of Louisiana State government into Capitol Park in downtown Baton Rouge.

The Claiborne Building is named after William Charles Cole Claiborne, appointed by Thomas Jefferson as Territorial governor, and elected Governor of the state in 1812.

It is a $54 million, 475,000-square-foot building. A $10 million parking garage for 1,400 vehicles also is included in the project.

Actually, the Claiborne Building might just be what replaced the Inn on the Lake. The river and lake positioning would suggest it. If so, it is a marked improvement over the hotel.

State Museum

Iberville Building

The Iberville Building is being built on the site previously occupied by the State Land and Natural Resources Building, and will house employees of the Department of Social Services. It was designed by Holly & Smith Architects, and is being constructed by Milton J. Womack & Co.

Conceived as one of the brother buildings by the Capitol Park Interpretive Master Plan, the Iberville Building forms one-half of the new Capitol Park gateway. The 270,000 s.f., 9-story office building is designed in cooperation with its adjacent gateway brother, the Bienville building, to complete a group of four buildings (along with LaSalle and Galvez) facing the Louisiana state capitol.

The gateway concept draws from history in that the exploring brothers, Iberville and Bienville, discovered a Gulf route to the mouth of the Mississippi River, the gate to Louisiana. The buildings both incorporate a third floor roof terrace facing the capitol and a nine story linear tower element. The elevator shafts are positioned so that exiting the cab provides a profound direct view of the W.P.A. art deco design of the Louisiana state capitol and its expansive formal gardens.

The majority of the buildings (including Iberville) within Capitol Park reference the forms and details of the WPA/art deco influence. Primary materials include precast concrete panels, glass curtain walls and aluminum wall panels. To contribute in the marking of the gateway, the tower is detailed with seven protruding curtain elements, serving as illuminated lanterns.

Shaw Center for the Arts

Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the sparkling new 55-million dollar Shaw Center for the Arts is the realization of a community that understands how visual and performing arts stimulate the personal and economic growth of a city. After years of planning, extensive fundraising and thousands of hours of physical labor, the Shaw Center opened its doors in May 2005.

Inside the channel-glass skin of the 125,000 square-foot facility resides a stunning art museum, as well as one of the most intimate and acoustically brilliant theatrical spaces in the southern United States. Towering high about the Mississippi River, the fifth floor of the structure houses the LSU Museum of Art in grand fashion. A dramatic museum space, the Museum sprawls the entire length of the Shaw Center, showcasing more than 17,000 square feet of exhibition space. The spacious facility houses touring and permanent collections. Seating 325 people, the Manship Theatre is truly a magical venue for musicians, dancers and actors alike. Designed in the spirit of a London "West End" space, the Manship includes an orchestra level and two balconies, a magnificent audio system, a large fly house and automated orchestra pit. Adjacent to the theatre are two state-of-the-art black box theatres, as well as a spacious contemporary art space "Brunner Gallery", which will feature some of the region's most exciting up and coming artists.

^Yes, the building in the foreground is part of the center. I havent been inside of the center yet though, so I don't know what it is used for.

The Shaw Center really looks great in person. It is part of the re-development of downtown Baton Rouge, a project started by the city to gove downtown an exiting makeover, give it a nightlife, and help draw people into it. The project so far has been very successfull.
