Here's a shot of the newly widened section of U.S. 190 in Covington. 190 through Covington is now 6 lanes, and the entire stretch of highway is booming in terms of new businesses and traffic. This photo was taken on Christmas morning, so that's the reason why you don't see any traffic.

Nice! Cane's! One of my friends from Texarkana likes it more than I ever did. Every time they coem down here, he drags his wife off to Cane's. I got him a Cane's gift card for Xmas.

I decided to add this info to the SE Louisiana Development Thread as it is some very good and progressive news about what will be the new tallest building in the state.

From the New Orleans Development Thread...

The official height of Trump International Hotel and Tower New Orleans was released today, and this thing will be the tallest building in the city and the state....and then some!

The official height of Trump New Orleans will be 842 feet, with the building being 716 feet tall, and the 126 foot spire topping it out at 842 feet. As has been mentioned, the City Planning Commission postponed a vote on the building for two weeks pending a traffic study. However, it has been said by everyone involved in the project that the project recieved a extremely favorable responce from the council, and that this thing is basically a done deal. Very exciting news for New Orleans!

Draft study supports La. transportation center

The Louisiana Airport Authority and Canadian Commercial Corp. have gotten a draft report commissioned to support the construction of a cargo transportation and distribution facility along the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

This is a MASSIVE project that has been talked about for a long time.

*That HUGE German Steel Co. has narrowed it's choices to Louisiana(St.James Parish) and Alabama (north of Mobile); unfortunately nearby states Mississippi and Florida have thrown their support to Alabama for possible job prospects. La. has the advantage of the Mississippi River. La. has talked about a $300 mil. tax-incentive package; while Alabama is expected to give $400 mil tax-incentive package tommorrow. It will be interesting to see.

I think the Steel Mill and the Cargo Airport might compliment each other.

2,900 acre Zachary Taylor mega-site in Tangipahoa near Fluker/I-55 is being eyed by a couple of developers. The proposals are said to include a mixed-use of residential; complementary retail develoment and professional sport-one not existing in Louisiana now, as a key componet.

Study: Port Fourchon crucial; Interruption of service would cost U.S. economy billions

Port Fourchon services 90 percent of the deepwater rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and even a brief interruption of services would cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars and thousands of jobs, a study released Thursday shows.

The Port of Fourchon in 2006 serviced offshore platforms and the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port to the tune of about $63.4 billion worth of oil and natural gas, according to a new study.

Louisiana Pushing For Bigger Nucor Steelmaking Project

Plan Offers More Than 1,000 Jobs

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Steelmaker Nucor's potential plan to build a plant in Louisiana now represents as many as 1,250 direct jobs. That's according to Louisiana's economic development chief.

The administration of Gov. Bobby Jindal is crafting an incentive package to cover Nucor's initial $2.1 billion investment, as well as all three potential phases that could attract $4 billion in investment.

Last week, the governor and economic chief Stephen Moret visited a Nucor plant in South Carolina. Both said the 900-employee plant hired many people without an initial industrial background - and many are now making salaries of at least $100,000.

Nucor has narrowed down U.S. sites to one in St. James Parish at Convent. But the company also is considering overseas sites. A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Jindal confirms Nucor picks Louisiana for plant

Gov. Bobby Jindal says Nucor Corp. has chosen a Louisiana site for a $3.4 billion iron and steel production facility that will be built in five phases. Jindal made the announcement today during a press conference in Gramercy. "Nucor is coming to Louisiana," he says. The first phase will be building a $750 million direct reduced iron facility near Convent; that plant would initially employ 150. Construction is set to begin on that phase in 2011, pending approval of the incentive package. That phase would be followed by a $400 million iron plant that would hire another 100. If all phases are carried out, the facility would have a payroll of 1,250 people by 2019. Nucor already has spent $50 million buying nearly 4,000 acres on the Mississippi River and obtained a state air quality permit for the plant. The company also had been considering a site in Brazil. In 2007, ThyssenKrupp considered the St. James Parish site for a $3.7 billion steel mill before settling on a location near Mobile, Ala.
