Saw on the news last night were Governor Easley wants to give $5 million to grade schools to start a "reading program". But, doesn't want to use the money from the "NC Education Lottery". I don't know why this should come as a suprise to me.

I noticed that as well. It's kinda funny since there are over 300 more places in Wake county selling tickets than there are in Mecklenburg

This article explains some of the details of the new Powerball program, which will become active on Tuesday (May 30th). North Carolina will become the 29th state to participate in Powerball, and one of three in the immediate southeast region (TN and SC already participate).

Ahh yeah thanks for reminding me.

It appears that when the lottery law was finally passed, there was actually no provision that requires a county to use it for education. The Mecklenburg county manager has figured it out and has proposed the lottery proceeds, including those from the vastly popular Powerball game, be used to give the residents a property tax cut instead of spending it on the schools. (which aren't held in high regard here)

The Education Lottery suppose to be supplement funding to the county's funding. but yeah, the County Manager cut back on county's funding from property taxes saying that the lottery proceeds are enough.
