Walked past the new Mellow Mushroom in downtown Winston at 4th and Marshall and it looks pretty good. The construction walls have been removed so the exterior is now visible including the store sign You can look inside now and it appears to be nearly complete. The furniture has been delivered so it should be ready for business soon.

The posted business hours are Mon-Wed 11am-11pm, Thurs-Sat 11am-2am.

Fantastic. Somebody tell the Wake students. How many late-night places do we have in downtown Winston now? I mean after 11 PM...

Actually that brings up a good point. What other businesses are open that late downtown? 411? Speakeasy Jazz? The Garage? These are all nightclubs/bars but where else can you eat that late at night except at that pizz place on Burke?

Christopher's New Global Cuisine, 6th & Vine, Foothills Brewery, 4th Street Filling Station have food and are open late.

Silver Moon Saloon and The Werehouse are other bars/clubs downtown.

Did you go inside? If so, how is it?

I did go inside. It looks very different from the other Mellow Mushrooms I have eaten at (Boone, Blowing Rock, Columbia). It has a very modern look as compared to the others. Lots of metal (metal covers the outside of the booths), lots of bright colors, including the whole ceiling and the menu, lots of geometric shapes, and bright color accent lights. They have built part of the restaurant (the part facing 4th st.) so that is can transform to outside dining in good weather. Looks nice though, hope the food is as good as the other MM's.

It open. I was downtown on business Saturday and they had a good crowd. Probably got better after Films on Fourth let out. Any idea of what brews are on tap?

I was just there and it is not open yet. There was a sign on the front of the door saying "Opening January 19, 2005" then there was a sign saying " Sorry for the confusion, but we are holding a private party tonight." Sorry to dissapoint you! It is very nice inside and I think this place will thrive!

I think they are shooting for a target date of October... 2009. Hopefully, they can make it. :D

Well, guys tonight was the opening of Mellow Mushroom! That place was packed! :w00t: Cars were filling up the parking decks and ground level lots. People were on the street and looking into store fronts. It was an urbanist's paradise for a mid-size town. Let's hope this place has great food and can stay afloat!

I was there last night for the "Grand Opening" with my wife & family, the food was real good like, just about the same as the other MM's. We went around 8:30 and it was still packed out the wahzoo. It was a 30 minute wait (ended up being 45, but that's not too bad for opening night). Anyways, good stuff, I recommend it.

Were the prices reasonable?

I was surprised reading in the paper this week about hearing that Thea's Jazz and Blues club on Liberty had closed in December due to various building code violations. Although I have never been there, I thought that having the club there was vital in revitalising the downtown area in providing a venue for music and socialisation.

Today, though, I read that the side is now being converted into a artists' centre where artists can rent one of the 250 sq ft rooms (22 total) for their craft. The remainder of the building will renovated for retail and commerical space. The name of the building will be the Artists on Liberty buiilding. All of this is untaken by Mike Coe, one of the main landlords downtown and is as responsible as anyone in its revitalisation as he owns the buildings that house Sweet Potatoes, Chelsees and the new DADA Community Center.

As for Thea's, apparently they are looking at new sites in the downtown area again and promised to reopen in summer.

they should go to 4th...right there on the corner of Marshall where Kababs used to be. they would do well there.

That would be an ideal location. Kababs used to have music late in the evening on the second floor so it could work again with the downstairs acting as a lounge. Being across the Mellow Mushroom gives patrons options for late night dining. With the hotels just steps away, it will draw traffic from there also. Question is whether the rent will be too high for Thea's as it was a losing concern before on Liberty and kept only in business by the love of the owner for R&B and jazz.
