Foodie Fest (previously called Restaurant Week) is happening from today through August 26th. Lots of downtown restaurants participating.

http://www.upstatefo...com/foodie_fest

This is a great time to try out places you haven't been before!

I was in Houston a couple of weeks ago during their restaurant week and I really like their angle......the set-up is similar......a set number of courses and special items at participating restaurants, but a set percentage of all food sales during that week go to local food banks. How great.....foodie fun and charity together! I wish Greenville would look at something like this. By the way, if in Houston, check out L'Olivier....on Westheimer, in Montrose, the space used to be an old porn store, now a fabulous restaurant with Panameras and 7 Series filling the valet line. They make a mean Aperol Spritz!

Tried Marks tonight and here are my thoughts....

Food:

Mostly spot on.

Truffle parmesan fries (yeah, truffle fries ARE passe in the culinary world, but these were great!)

Burger with manchego, avocado, and black bean / corn salsa. Excellent!

Shared a "Sanibel Sunset", shaketail....excellent!

Drink:

Played around and kept changing.

First up, Vodka Gimlet. Lets just say they do NOT know how to make a Gimlet.

Next up , a Dark Mojito. Average. A bit too tart.

Next up, from their specialty menu....a HendrickSling. Hard to mess up any drink with Hendricks, right? It was wonderful!!!!

Several of us shared and finished with the shaketails. All were excellent.

Food presantation:

Loved it! Minimalistic. Concise. Controlled size portions. Even with tables full of food, to look through the restaurant, the tabletops seemed clean and neat. Excellent food presentation.

Interior:

Nice. Clean. Industrial chic.....a bit yester-year, but agreeable.

Service:

Bad. Wait staff is young and not experienced. Waiter constantly hovered over our table for lengthy times, slowly entering our order by pecking one letter at a time into his electronic / I-whatever order pad. Tech is great, but it should be hidden and be there to add speed to ordering. Our waiter would have been faster if he had just screamed...."cheesie greasy and let it bleed" to the kitchen staff. LOL. They do not understand what the technology is there for and they are not using it well. It seemed a burden......

All the wait staff seemed to cluster in one corner. They looked ill at ease timid in their positions. Not impressed at all with staff.

It did just open. Give them a grace period on service.

Went in on Sunday afternoon - my review is exactly the same (including the burger/fries order!)

We went there this past Saturday. Your review is spot on. Everything except the wait staff was perfect. I had to ask for mustard and mayo twice, but the food was so good, I did not care. I also liked that they gave you a carafe of tea without ice in it. There is nothing worse than watered down sweet tea that most restaurants serve. Grill Marks does it right!

The fact Bavarian Pretzel Factory is growing and moving into the old Italian Market space is something to cheer about!  BPF is one of the few jewels in Greenville. :good:  :good:  :good:

Saying it is one of "the few" jewels in Greenville is a bit of a dramatic statement, don't you think? Especially since you have posted about Greenville's sophisticated foodie scene numerous times in the past.

I'm thrilled that BPF is growing quickly enough to justify moving into a larger space, but I am concerned that the traffic volume and the visibility on Woods Lake Rd. are nowhere near those found on Woodruff Rd. Hope this move doesn't turn out to be a mistake for BPF in the long run.

My thoughts exactly.

Italian Market packed the place every day when they first opened, so if the food is good, BPF should fill it up.  When I. M. downgraded the food and turned into Olive Garden, it died a quick death. Echoing an earlier comment, I would likely never visit them on Woodruff

What's up guys. I know the forums are pretty slow on Sundays, but I have a random question that hopefully someone can answer for me. I'm here in town for the weekend visiting my mom and the two of us are planning on spending the afternoon strolling downtown and west end. My mother is really craving a lobster sub or hoagie. Is there anywhere in the downtown area that any of you guys can recommend? Many thanks in advance.

There are a ton of restaurants downtown. A few in the West End I would recommend are Smoke on the Water, High Cotton, Lazy Goat, Larkins, Liberty Tap Room, Passerelle Bistro, Breakwater, American Grocery, and Mellow Mushroom.

A few in other parts of downtown I would recommend are Roost, Nantucket Seafood, Soby's, Tupelo Honey Cafe, Nose Dive, Carolina Ale House, and Trio's.
