Unknown, underappreciated restaurants

OK Soleil, next up, try Seven Seas (AKA 7 Mares), an authentic Mexican on Kazoo at Adams. Not much to look at, but some of the best. Try the garlic fried fish (they can take off the head if you ask). Absolutely fab. Should be a $28 entree, instead it is like $10 bucks or so.

I knew you'd like it! Now go back with some friends. He needs our show of support to stay in business.

So how about Bombay Cuisine next?

Love Bombay Cuisine, but my BF has been curious about

Little Africa for awhile and with all the good reviews, we're

doing dinner there tomorrow evening - will post our

impressions after. Thanks all!

Also, if you haven't been to The Kopper Top, by all means

go - it's now decorated for Lovers - Valentines Day - and

be sure to say Hi to Mark B., the owner - you will feel like

a regular before you leave!

There are a few good Vietnamese restaurants on South Division that are great if you like Pho.

Another great little place is a Bosnian restaurant on 28th street between 131 and Division. It's called "Bosna". The man and woman that run it are VERY nice people. They may a great Cevapcici...pronounced Chevapchachi. It's a great tasting spiced sausage sandwhich similar to a Gyro but still very unique.

I love the Thai House in Cascade!!

Speaking of South Division, has anyone been to the Wei Wei Palace just north of 44th Street? I hear its good but have yet to go there.

Wei Wei is very good. In my opinion the only true Chinese restaurant in GR.

It feels like you are in a Chinatown (San Francisco, Toronto, etc.) Very authentic Canton (southern chinese) food...nothing like you'll find at the other "Chinese-American" restataurants in town. When I read the menu of dishes they served, I barely recognized any of them...and it was in English!

Thanks, Eagle, for starting this thread and

recommending Little Africa. And it was

a nice surprise to meet you and your wife, as

well as run into an old acquaintance, her husband

and beautiful baby!

I had my reservations about trying the food,

(and it was a little cold in the room), but I am

so glad we went. My boyfriend said it was

every bit as good as the place he went to

in Lansing and we both enjoyed the food and

the experience very much. The owner told us

he had been open for eight years and we certainly

won't wait another eight to go back for more.

He brought us a wonderful tea flavored

with ginger after the meal - we hadn't asked for

it, but I would next time as it was a perfect way

to top off some really good food.

Very, very nice.

That's a pretty cool story  Question: how in the world did you know it was eagle? Is there an UrbanPlanet badge I'm not aware of?

Nitro: do not post a picture of the thong please :P

Why, yes! I received my Urban Planet badge along with decoder ring

by sending in three ideas for improving downtown to the DDR in

graphic novel form, and by covertly photographing the bathroom in

Guy Bazzani's living quarters and posting them on a secret website

sponsored by HGTV. If I hadn't blown my cover by inadvertantly

including my blog site to a post in this forum, different topic,

I was trying to make into a PM, I would have received the

glow-in-the-dark UP t-shirt.

Darn! (Us old folk aren't the most technologically savvy.)

I don't know how Eagle got his badge, but rumor has it he

earned it from a standoff at the Azzar estate where he was spotted

at midnight sitting in a nondescript minivan with a bullhorn on top

blasting Megadeths The System Has Failed/Countdown to Extinction

until dawn. Unfortunately, Mr. Azzar was in the Grand Caymans, and

missed this impromptu concert, but Eagle was still awarded for his

grand efforts.

Hope you get yours soon, too, Dadof3 so we can recognize you

and say Hi!

(And don't forget to learn the secret handshake.) ;)

I agree with John Denver.

Wei Wei Palace is thee best place for Chinese food in West Michigan. Thai House is thee best place for Thai food in West Michigan. Hands down, they win, especially for their rice noodle dishes. Rice noodles dishes that I love: Chow Fun for Cantonese and Pad Se-Ew for Thai. This is my vote and it comes from years of family research at authentic Cantonese & Thai establishments in Chinatowns all over the world. If you plan on going to Wei Wei, PM me & I will suggest a few favorites. On weekends, I love to go there for Dim Sum. It's a style of dining where small dishes are brought around the tables on carts & you select the ones you want & share at your table. Similar to how you dine at San Chez, though Chinese style. If you check out these places, let me how your experience was. Chinese New Year is on January 29th, it is the Year of the Dog.

Wei Wei is also located next to a great Vietnamese Pho restaurant, Pho Soc Trang. For those of you who are like, what is Pho??? My favorite item is their fresh spring rolls, the cold ones. Oh, and if you are looking for a Chinese market, they have one in the same complex. I suggest trying a Vietnamese Pearl Tapioca drink form the Vietnamese-French cafe in front of the store. On a culture note, it is rude to play with your chopsticks at the table in restaurants.

If you want to learn how to use Chopsticks, check out this website.

On another note, for a great Italian bistro besides Bistro Bella Vita, I suggest Tuscan Express, it

What's the info on the Kopper Top? Is it more of a bar or restaurant? What's the food or drink selection like? What about hours?

Well, I would say it's more of a restaurant, but that's probably

because I'm not much of a drinker. The food is traditional

American fare, steak, potatoes, the dinner 'basket', things like that,

but done better than many. The thing I like best about The Kopper Top

is the atmosphere...it's worth going just to sit under the canopy of

lights celebrating whatever holiday is imminent. Cozy booths,

a nice, comfy date place, really good food, reasonably priced.

Don't know about the hours, but you could call.

For such a tiny space, it sure exudes a lot of character. That is probably what I like about it most of all.

I wear my UP badge with pride.

Spent the day downtown today with my wife. Started at the new Y, had lunch at the new bookstore, shopped at the Grocery store on Monroe, slid by Martha's vinyard and ended up at Harvest Health on Eastern. Lots of good stuff GR has to offer.

Tuscan Express is very good. I, too, wish they weren't in a strip mall but it is worth the trip. The pizza's are right up there with Rose's.

By the way, it was easy to spot MeJane. Those of us on the UP forum just have the "Enlightened Glow" on our faces.
