2007 Census estimates put the city's population over 200,000 again! Estimates for 2006 were under 193,000.

Wow, Coupe! You're just full of good news today! This is a very good thing for the city. This, of course, is something that we have suspected for quite some time now - it just had not be officially publicized until now. I hope the numbers continue to go up!

cheers! :alc:

I look at old maps of the city and old pictures of neighborhoods inside Richmond that no longer exist. They seemed to be full of people and then urban renewal cleared those areas off the face of the planet and urban decay took the rest. We have new neighborhoods, infill, and places with new uses as residences taking the places of those destroyed neighborhoods. I wondered how with all these new places could the city lose people. It didn't make sense. Now we need to create more places and make the city more dense and bring back the retail!

I was at the State Library this past Saturday viewing the Viginia's "Never Built exhibit. I believe it will be there until May. Needless to say it is really small and does not include many of dead projects of Richmond.

However, the exhibit shows a proposal for the large lot on Cary Street between Dominion Power and One James Center. In the mid-80's, a 50-story spiral was porposed for this lot. There is rendering of it at the exhibit of how it would of looked as part of the skyline. Due to the real estate downturn during the late 80's and early 90's, this project was cancelled.

It is the same firm doing the 2,000 ft Chicago Spire, which is currently under construction.

Happy April 2nd Richmond!

You know I've been trying to draw my own maps of sections of Richmond, and I tell you the Fan is a headache. But after I conquered it and made it match up with Carver, Brook, Chamberlayne, the Barton Heights and Highland Park areas all gave me yet another. Richmond looks so simple and neat but drawing it is something else....

This is where I need Burt...

Anyone know exactly where Westham is? Anyone know the exact site of the foundry?

Also, anyone have any knowledge of Coalpit Road, did it follow the path of the Deep Run Tnpk and was called that after it became a turnpike, exactly how large Hermitage Plantation was, and when it was demolished?

Now Henrico is flooding the region's airwaves with commercials about how they should be Henrico, Va instead of Richmond, Va. God I hope they are defeated, but Henrico does have enough people who hate Richmond and will buy whatever their government tells them.

Thankfully history determines a places name just as much as the place does - so mapmakers won't be changing Richmond to Henrico ANY time soon on their roadmaps!!!!

It won't matter what they change their name to. They are still a suburban county and will always be known as a suburb of Richmond. Kind of like Cary and Raleigh.
