Richmond off-topic postings

Oh what the hell. Being part of this forum is one the very few bright spots of my life. I need something to make me happy and look forward to. Reading about Richmond's positives makes me smile. There is too much going on in Richmond to temporarily leave. There will be some quite breaks in the middle but...

shak is back.

^^^Maybe we can get our Police Chief back as well...

Good news, Shak.

I congratulate Charlotte on its financial expertise as well as its determination to become a National center of pre-eminence in finance, sports, arts and modern architecture. North Carolina banking laws allowed the hard-driving metropolis to lure business from Virginia and other states.

In my long-ago youth, we were jokingly told the mantra for Carolinians was the three R's -- "Readin', writin' and the Road to Richmond" -- a platitude that is hardly applicable in these times.

Richmond's architecture, character, culture, density, and geographic beauty are among features that surpass Charlotte's attractiveness, but Virginia's State Capital could strive a bit more in the competitive category, IMO.

I didn't know this was going down, but gee, what a great way to unite the region.

Are people just plain stupid??? No one even has pride in Richmond anymore! Everyone wants to be an individual! The regional segragation in Virginia needs to stop - this just retarded and might just be a part of the Richmond region's great fall. What a shame.

Eric... how could you miss my many rants about it around the time Henrico citizens voted for it earlier this year? Now because of Henrico, Chesterfield, who said they wouldn't look into it, is now and so is Spotsylvania with Fredericksburg. As far as Henrico goes, I have said time and time again they have made their own downtown, stole many of Richmond's residents, have not held up their end of the deal since Richmond can't annex and would lose revenue to them, and now they don't even want to be associated with Richmond. Why don't they ask the GA for a city charter? I guess that'll be next.

Did we miss your rants or ignored them? :P (joke)

Sorry... You opened yourself. I could not resist. ;)

I like order. If one is in the corporate boundaries of Richmond, then they should say Richmond. If outside, then say something else.

Now that you mention it, I do remember your rants. Sorry, short memory I guess.

You should never ignore what I say.

Usually I'm about strict boundaries and names, after all I do not like people calling themselves Short Pumpians when they don't live in Short Pump and I do not like how people say I live in Church Hill when I don't. I am very proper about what is and isn't downtown, West End, East End, Northside and Southside. But how will having this county, with its history of turning its back on the city, changing its name helping with regionalism? Richmond is the brand name, but now Henrico can claim whatever it has as its own and its own alone. If the city of Richmond stands alone in this region, we'll always suffer and Henrico and Chesterfield can continue forever thumbing their noses at the city.

Those little things can set someone back about 12k.

Might be worth it with the gas prices as high as they are...and believe me - just because the price is coming down now doesn't mean that it won't shoot back up because it will. OPEC is about to turn off the oil spigot so be prepared!

I saw this on the way in to work today. Who says you can't find parking downtown? You just need the right car.

CommRE, I'm borrowing this shot to point out that the three-story tannish buildings in the background are the group of historic storefronts that wrap around the southwest corner of 14th and Main Streets. The new Religious Freedom complex, including two Marriott hotels, will rise on a lot at 14th and Cary Streets directly behind these buildings which are owned by the Religious Freedom group.

Back to topic, I wouldn't mind having one of these minature cars -- especially if they sell new for only $12K.

If this is the same car I think it is, they might cost a little more than 12k. Mercedes is putting these little buggers out. From what I was told a couple of years ago, they can take a side impact and roll like a ball, while protecting driver and passenger. Think hampster in a plastic ball. They are all over Canada.

I have a friend of mine buy one for 13k, fully loaded.

Remember the bear that created a stir a few months ago when it wandered along Belvidere Street? This morning, a deer caused a four-vehicle crash near the War Memorial on Belvidere at the north end of Lee Brdge in Downtown Richmond.

From today's inRich:

http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-co...10-21-0153.html

No major injuries, but one fatality -- the deer expired.

Crowd estimates for Obama's appearance today were 13,000 within the Richmond Coliseum and another 7,000 outside. They should have taken my advise and opened the Convention Center to handle the overflow with large TV screens scattered around the place. ;)

I attempted to attend today and was right at the 6th Street entrance to the Coliseum when the fire marshal closed it. I was one of the first redirected to a 'holding area' outside the coliseum, and 10 minutes later met face to face with Obama himself. It was a-w-e-s-o-m-e!

I agree! Thats all we need is more big govt! He is a socialist

I hate it when people try to oversimplify things. The folks who most adamantly oppose McCain and Obama generally know the least about them. Don't dumb down the political conversation throwing around generalizations you heard on the radio. Do some research. I did that myself recently and one of the main reasons people call him a socialist is because of one quote that wasn't even his own... read this link in its entirety, read the transcript from the Wall Street Journal, then come back and tell us your thoughts. The last sentence really sums it up.
