What's wrong with HR and Louisville, I heard their downtown is growing pretty rapidly too and lots of apts etc being built

I wasn't trying to say anything negative about them, we are simply growing faster. I was basically pointing out that if you compare us against the fastest growing cities in the country then we are always going to look like we aren't doing well. However the cities/areas I mentioned, while still growing, aren't growing as fast. Which according to this article would mean they are doing even worse than Richmond, which I don't think is the case. The RTD article does not have a great frame of reference in my opinion.

Seems like an awesome event to go to in order to get some “inside” information on upcoming commercial real estate projects coming up in Richmond.  Just throwing this out there for you locals. :)

* A report to us would be required.

I'm proud of Norfolk tho. Losing an F500 stings probably but cities definitely shouldn't have to bend over backwards for corporations and incentivize their staying. Wonder what generous tax breaks Atlanta taxpayers are shelling out as a welcoming present

I can't imagine the blow it would be to lose one of our F500 companies.

You don't have to lol. MWV (aka the new 'WestRock') considers Atlanta metro area it's corporate HQ so we no longer have them

Agreed RVA.  700 jobs lost is a minuscule amount of the 700,000 or so in HR. Instead of corporate subsidies, put taxpayer money towards workforce development, small business assistance, and city services. The gap will eventually be filled. NS must have a Norfolk presence until 2026, so at least there’s time to gameplan for their exit.

Technically they still have 2 headquarters - here and Atlanta.  But fairly inevitable they make it Atlanta at some point.

Richmond was MeadWestvaco headquarters and Atlanta was RockTenn headquarters and the two haven't made the jump to shutting one or other down.

Hasn't had an impact on employment as far as I know in Richmond - not same as NS picking up and leaving (Westrock hasn't left).

Since it's such big news up here in NoVA (had the whole nation's attention and anticipation), might as well repeat here that Amazon HQ2 has selected Crystal City, Arlington and Queens, NYC as dual locations.

Since it's a split instead of one location, half the impact will likely go to either location, which means our area will see even more marginal an impact.

I think this chapter pretty much closes here but might as well mention it here since it is still a fairly large economic development win (win of course depends on how generous (see: excessive) our tax incentive package was) for the state.

A book recommendation for the group:  "Five Miles Apart,  A World Away" by James Ryan, the new president of UVa.  By comparing Freeman and TJ, Ryan explains the issues regarding education in the United States, but especially Richmond.  Fascinating read if you want to understand a lot about how Richmond's schools evolved.

NS has their HQ here in name only. They have 1900 employees in Atlanta and 500 in Norfolk. The writing has been on the wall for years. Economically, this barely makes a dent. We’ve recovered from far worse losses, I’m talking orders of magnitude worse. We’ll survive. The thing we’re taking a hit on is prestige. Downtown has been on a tear lately, and this loss sets us back a little bit. If the casino thing goes through though all will be forgotten.

Found this announcement today.  Anyone know what’s going on that would involve a crane?  Check it out:

“Bus Stop # 384 at WB 9th and Broad, as well as the WB Government Center Pulse station, will be temporarily closed on Saturday, December 22, 2018 from 7AM – 3PM.

A crane in the vicinity will be performing work in this block of westbound Broad St., closing these stops and the Bus Only Lane. “

I saw an interesting tidbit in this article about a law firm leasing space at Riverfront Plaza.

Quote

Wilkins said Riverfront Plaza is now at more than 90 percent occupancy, up from 65 percent when Hertz purchased it in 2015.

The third quarter report from Thalhimer looks pretty good too.
